Can carry my gear 2 remote Wild Places
Ortlieb Backroller Classic Panniers I have the older version of these that are in solid black, so no fancy design on the front. I have had mine for about 5 years and I do an insane amount of prim camping (work related) where I can mountain-bike all my gear in using my Ortliebs (which means love of place in German fyi). For all these years, I'm still using the same ones, as they are crazy durable. I don't need compression or waterproof sacks anymore. I roll the top seal as many times as possible pushing out all the air compacting all my gear. I stopped using the extra strap that goes on the outside years ago, instead I grab the top and roll the strap, letting out any extra air, as mentioned above and then I clip the ends together across the top, completely eliminating the need for the extra strap. They keep my gear dry even when riding over creek crossing where the bags get really wet on the outside. Tips and Stuff to watch out for: 1. The adjustable roll down top, which is great for allowing different load amounts, can get sand, dirt and some water in it, so be sure to open your bag to dust that off before bringing it in your tent. 2. Don't leave the black one's in the sun as they will get really hot. 3. When biking with them empty be sure to fluff them up with air i.e. don't flatten them and then put them on your bike as the straps can get stuck on a tree as you pass by it on your bike. 4. Always balance the weight evenly so each bag has about the same weight in it. 5. I put climbing hooks of different colors on the outside hook to distinguish what's in what bag. 6. Always check that you have them secured to your bike rack. 7. The white light reflectors on sides have freaked out one horse and one dog (I guess they sort of look like big white eyeballs). One little doggy would not pass me on the trail till we figured out why and I turned my bags around. So in summation a durable, well thought out design that does everything as advertised. Don't settle for the cheaper versions that don't allow for easy removal by just grabbing the handle, just bite the bullet and buy the expensive quality product from the start, you won't regret it.

Just OK
These panniers are fine. I used one for a couple years, it's waterproof, built to last, holds a lot of stuff. But, it's hard to carry off the bike, there's no way to lock it up whatsoever, and the inside is cavernous and hard to organize. The knobs ont he inside scratch your laptop. The shoulder strap is poorly designed and hard to use. I replaced these panners with a pair of Vaudes, which are more attractive and have a locking cable, more secure on the bike, and are also made in Germany and waterproof.

Great Item

Purchased these panniers after a little research for a bike trip with friends to Valdez from Anchorage. They fit the rack without any adjustments, were easy to put-on/take-off when we stopped for the night. I put everything I needed for the 5-day ride except the tent into two panniers (pad, sleeping bag, jet-boil, small amount of extra clothes, rain gear, food, etc. I was surprised at how much they could hold. The ride started and ended in rain without anything getting wet inside. I'm pretty happy with these. Love the designer series colors. Planning a trip next summer from Fairbanks to Anchorage. All three of us purchased these panniers and had no issues with them.

Worth Every Penny Spent

The quality is uncompromising. The straps are a bit thin but that trades weight for comfort. Where it really shines is in its adjustability. My rear rack is a bit off on one side by a few milimeters...the locking hook on the bottom of the pannier can be adjusted in depth to about 3mm, despite the left having a different adjustment than the right they both fit PERFECT. I am totally satisfied, the bonus in all of it is they are waterproof!

Excellent Panniers!

Was looking for a modern, clean, and versatile pannier for my back rack. These are great for so many reasons. I like the fact that I can use both or one at a time. Since I opted to keep my left side basket permanently attached, I'm able to use the pannier on the right side and take it on/off as I please. The attaching mechanism is ingenious - lift up to release and locks securely in place. I opted for white to not only match color tone of my bike but for safety reasons, these things nearly glow in low light. These will be, without a doubt the last panniers I will ever need to buy! Absolutely love these things.

excellent daily commuter cargo

I use these to truck a change of clothes, my laptop, and a lunch to and from work daily. I also use them to pick up groceries and find that the capacity is just about perfect for my weekly grocery run. The bags attach and detach very quickly-- there's a simple one-pull handle that unhooks both clips with one lifting action. Very neat. It works so easily that I sometimes worry at stops that somebody will run by and detach the bags and run away with them (don't worry -- I'm just being paranoid). If you don't pull on the handle, the bags stay firmly attached and do not come loose during travel.

Right product for me

I live in Chicago and do not own a car. This is my first pair of panniers after graduating from the milk crate system(R). Under normal conditions I use just one and leave my lock on the other side of the rack. This provides ample storage for my work bag or a quick errand. Two bags can get a TON of stuff moved around. They are surprising stable if you leave them unrolled (if obviously no longer waterproof). Last weekend I shoved a 4' roll of window screening in. No issues whatsoever on a 8 mile ride home. Other than around town, I've used the panniers for camping. I packed up my bike and jammed these babies full of gear. No issues at all. My only complaint is the off-bike experience. The straps don't allow very effective ways to carry one bag, let alone two. At this price I'm very hesitant to leave the bags on my bike when I lock it up, so they always need to go with me. I need to come up with a better solution for carrying them.

I wish I had bought these from the start

When I started bike commuting, I bought a cheap pair of panniers, figuring they were all pretty much the same. They finally wore out (broken zipper, splitting seams) and when the Ortlieb panniers went on sale, I thought I'd give them a try. These are the ulitmate panniers. Everything about them is sturdy and well designed. The closure and adjustable hook system make them rock solid on my rack. The waterproof material keeps my things dry even in pouring rain, sleet or snow. And the amount of storage is amazing. The best thing about these, however, is how well built they are. I can't imagine having to replace them, ever.

excellent design and superior quality

I recently used these panniers on a month-long tour and was very pleased. They are easy to adjust for a precise fit to your rack, and the hooks near the top have a ingenious system that automatically locks and unlocks them to the rack as you lift or release the handle. The bags are also very easy to get things in and out of thanks to the wide mouth. The material is very durable and waterproof as advertised but a good spill can scruff the fabric enough compromise the waterproofing. However, my bags took a beating and are still waterproof for all intents and purposes. Compared to other panniers I've used, these were easily worth the little extra $.

great touring bags

Got these in Oregon the day before beginning a three week tour on a recumbent. Used these bags with a mid-rack below the seat. They fit just fine, and I could get into them easily when they were on the bike. So easy to put on and take off. I found the carry straps were just fine for carrying them onto the train at the end of my tour. Not uncomfortable at all. I have yellow, and there's a side benefit: the insides are yellow also, and its easy to look in and see what is where. Don't think that would be so easy with a dark colored set. Love them.

Great for riding, need work for carrying

I bought these with the intention of using them for touring. However, as I build up my endurance, I've found myself grabbing one or both of these bags for grocery runs, picnics, and even commuting into work on days when I need to cart a lot of stuff. The attachment handle to the bike is great, the little pocket inside the bag is handy for little items I need quicker access to, and they had withstood being stuffed with a fair amount of weight. My only gripe is the experience OFF the bike - the shoulder strap is thin, the little rubber pad on it moves around easily, and the bag has a tendency to hit me in the back of the leg as I walk. I know that there are panniers out there better designed for commuting, and that will be my eventual solution, but I wish these were a little better adapted in that regard so I don't need to own so many different bags!
