Great Product!
Man, these matches have gotten really bad reviews... Personally, I love them. The matches themselves are bulky, and have a tendency not to light on the first strike, (which is why I gave it a 4/5) but are impossible to put out with wind and rain. I put this brand to the test against Coghlans's and a 2 other brands of storm proof matches, and let me say these are fantastic. First off they are SOOO windproof that even after a 30 mph gust, and me blowing on them (till I turned blue :p ) they kept burning... And hot! As for the water test these babies burn even after being submerged, and in the rain! Great product!
Useless In Wet Weather
Cannot overstate how bad these matches and canisters are, how little you can rely on them. They're fine on a pleasant day, but all matches are. When they get wet from rain or snow they're completely useless: The lighter strips tear, the surfacing rubs off on the match heads, and the matches don't light. Absolutely do not count on these working in wet conditions. I had some trouble with them in light snow earlier in the year, but could not believe how completely useless they were in a recent modest downpour. Negligible wind either time. Went through the entire included set of strips and half a canister of matches without getting even a single one to light.
Like a champ!
I was camping on a very windy, remote stretch of beach at P.I.N.S. for 10 days earlier this year and these were the only way I was able to start a fire. The thick waterproof coating makes them harder to strike than normal matches but that comes with the territory. Don't push on them too hard, strike 2 or 3 times and enjoy your camp fire.
Good Matches
These are the matches I use while backpacking. Note that they are not waterproof. They are not easy to light, but I do not find them hard to light. They are not strike anywhere. I keep them in a waterproof container with a striker inside the waterproof container.
a new backpacking essential
These matches are great. We built a fire in the middle of a cold, soaking rain with wet wood! One match to start a fire that warmed us for hours. I also brought a few homemade fire starters that worked really well (wax-soaked dryer lint in paper egg carton). My only recommendation on the matches would be to make the stick a little stronger. The end is so substantial that it is easy to break the stick. I actually held the back of the orange stuff and then moved my fingers back when it started.
Burn hot, but keep the box dry!
These burn well, once you get them lit. However, the strikers on the side of the box are useless if they get even a bit damp. There are extra strikers wrapped in plastic inside the box. I don't know how well they hold up to moisture. My advice is to keep them dry until you need them.
work but burn quickly
Have made numerous fires with these matches in windy and rainy conditions. They work! Only about half the match is covered with the weather-proof material, and it burns pretty darn quick. They get the job done and I am pleased with my purchase. They are a necessity for ANY first-aid/emergency kit for backpacking.
Sweet
I was looking for waterproof matches, thought these were expensive but i was intrigued. I lit 2 under a nice bed of kindling and boom instant fire. Have not gotten them wet, but they are super awesome in the wind. ps, do not test them inside
They Do Their Job!
Sure, these are expensive, but it's nice to have a few of these in your backpack just in case when hiking. They're powerful little torches and I've used them just fine in the rain.
Awesome
After igniting my camp stove I extinguished the match in a cup of water. After removing the match it relit.
