Merrell Moabs are very good hiking boots. They won't last nearly as long as leather boots, but if you're looking for disposable, lightweight boots, Moabs are a good choice. Only problem is with the various "waterproof" and gore-tex versions. These "waterproof, breathable" membranes must be very thin to have any chance of being a tiny bit "breathable." As such, they are very delicate. Don't expect a gore-tex membrane to last long with you stomping on it before it tears. Once it tears, water can leak in. Might as well just to straight to a "non waterproof" boot that at least allows water to escape once it gets in your boot. My wife's Moab Goretex boots started leaking a little bit on her second or third hike. After a year, they are the worst of both worlds - water easily gets in, but doesn't easily get out. The goretex membrane means they dry out VERY slowly after taking them off. This is by no means unique to Merrell. Goretex is a dumb idea in any footwear except winter boots where it's protected by thick layers of insulated padding.
Great waterproof shoe with great snow traction. Completed the trek to Camp Muir with them yesterday and they worked great. Great out of the box, no breakin needed.
