Fantastic tent, but the one I received from REI had damage due to longterm storage. The one from Nemo was perfect, which I will review after I explain the damage. Much of the tent body fabric was in what I would call a fatigued condition. Multiple panels were clearly fatigued/stretched and had pinholes which I have only ever seen in tents with a fair bit of use, or stored for too long improperly (tightly stuffed with the tent poles in the syuff sack, as is the norm when on the shelf). It also had earpy signs of seam tape delamination occurring in the middle of the tent body. To be clear, this was not a returned previously used/damaged tent. It was still packaged identically to the one from Nemo, including the way everything was folded in the stuff sack, the rubber bands around the stakes and poles, etc. Everything was perfectly clean as well, and guy outs were bundled like they were fresh from the factory. Everything looked like a factory packaging job. This isn't a criticism of REI or Nemo, but just a reality of a large retail chain having a niche, high-end product that doesn't sell as frequently as tents like the Dagger/Hornet. As for the tent, it is really well made and sturdy. Setup is intuitive and fairly quick for a 3-4 season tent. It's surprisingly well ventilated despite the limited bug net panels. When guyed out, it is rock solid in the wind. The diamond floor shape makes it pretty roomy and 3 people shouldn't be a problem, even with a bit of wiggle room. The tub seems plenty deep to me for inclement weather. Thrhe height is more than enough for sitting up comfortably, and there is plenty of room while laying down (I'm 6'1"). The only drawback to the design is that it is kind of a pain to get the fly on when it is windy, but it is doable alone and shouldn't be bad with 2 people. I wouldn't try setting this tent up while gloved if it is windy or you will risk losing the fly. There are a few optional guy line attachment points without lines and no extra paracord is provided. I would at least recommend 2-3 spots along the bottom edge of the rainfly to improve ventilation and reduce the amount of quivering the fly does with wind. The stakes that came with the tent aren't bad, but they are the same as other 3 season tents by Nemo, which are slightly heavier than I prefer. I would recommend considering snow stakes in the winter. There also are not enough if you intend to use all 4 standard guy lines along with the 6 corner stakes for windy conditions (you would need 10 total). It is definitely overkill for normal backpacking or camping, and quite heavy for thru-hiking. If you want a single tent for use during both summer and winter in the mountains, this would be worth considering. It seems like it would hold up fine for most mountaineering conditions if you aren't just slapping this down on a windy ridge during a storm without digging in a bit.
Took the NEMO Kunai into a 100 km/h snowstorm, and it was rock solid. We didn’t feel a thing inside, no drafts, no flapping, just total protection. Super durable, easy to set up, and perfect for four-season missions. This tent can handle serious weather. Highly recommend for alpine adventures.
