Good Idea but....
This is a great idea but execution is not great. First off, when wearing the hat with out the ear flaps down the tips of the flaps stick out - not a good look. I put small pieces of velcro at the point of each flap to make sure they stayed against the hat. Also there is no way to size the hat. I am in between a small and medium (closer to a medium), so the medium is bit too large. I put a 1/2 in piece of elastic inside the headband (all the way around) to snug it up and not to lose it in a gust of wind.
My new go to winter hiking hat
This hat is great! Very lightweight (2.5oz / 70g for a large) yet warm. Was my primary winter hat down to 10F in the snow last weekend and performed like a champ. The fleece lining is very lightweight, but the nylon exterior is a great wind barrier adding to the warmth, and the flaps give ample coverage for the ears without interfering with my earbuds. Don’t know what the other reviewer is talking about but the ear flaps tuck up under a lip on the cap when folded up and do NOT stick out. I was specifically looking for a winter hat with a brim that didn’t make me look like a dork. This is it. If I had one suggestion for V2.0 … Add a lightweight drawstring cord with cord lock to the headband. It fits well but has some stretch to it, and on windy days it’d be beneficial to be able to manually tighten it down.
Work best on a sunny day
Mostly a good hat, what I appreciate is the normal brim to keep the sun out of eyes. Despite the fact I bought the small size it was still big on my head. If is not windy the ear flaps do keep my ears warm. That said I will either need to wear a hoodie or ear wrap to keep my ears warm, especially when it gets colder and/or on windy days. Another thing the material is thin for a winter hat.
Ear flaps stick out
The ear flaps stick out, reducing the warmth and making the cap look (more) silly.
