[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] "Dark Steel" is a dark navy-blue color (almost black) instead of the dark gray color pictured in the description. Additionally, the bottom half of the torso is a different fabric with a shiny appearance. The fit is super boxy--think contractor garbage bag. The jacket won't win any beauty competitions but will probably get the job done. Ultimately, I'm more interested in how it functions, so for the "final sale" price I'm not too upset--that's why I give it three stars. Had I paid full price, though, I would've been extremely disappointed; the difference between the jacket pictured and the one received are substantial enough that I thought I'd been sent the wrong jacket.
What's gone wrong with Marmot, and who writes the specs. Seem to be multiple versions of this jacket all called the same thing. This must be the eco version. Advertised velcro cuffs, but not on this jacket.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this jacket last fall because I wanted a heavier down jacket, a kind of one and done layering system for the colder winter days. Works great for its purpose, I don’t think I ever got cold wearing this thing, often with only a fleece on underneath and in sub 10 F conditions. Unfortunately a seam on the chest broke about two months into use, not a big deal it was easy to patch but I would’ve appreciated a bit more durability from the jacket honestly, that’s why it only gets four stars for me. Would still recommend, great winter coat.
I bought this last year after I had a similar north face equivalent, I have to say I'm very happy. This is 100 percent waterproof, windproof, has toasty hand pockets with fleece and has not leaked a single feather. Really nice quality NF couldn't compare to this. Not quite as warm as real sheep fur, but for the weight of this jacket the warmth to weight ratio is phenomenal! nice easy wearing, easy to put on and walk around, light. Throw it on, heavy fur is a little warmer but harder to wear and very heavy. Love it ! Will be a keeper
This is a really well made, warm and handsome jacket. The outer material is very sheer and therefore easy to slide on. It has a substantial thickness to it that will handle the coldest of days. The bottom half of the outside is shinier, which is easy to see in the picture of the black but is also true for the Vetiver color which I got. In general I think jacket designers need to make the belly section darker and less shinier to deemphasize it but they usually do the opposite. The fit is relaxed with a hint of an athletic cut so it is not completely dumpy like most men's tops. The hood is warm and cozy. The length is more than a jacket but less than a parka so your beltline is covered. I would highly recommend this for the 50% off price I got. It is even worth close to full price as well.
Followed size guide, was still huge, decided to return. REI wanted to charge me for the return shipping. Beware. I purchased the jacket on sale. They would not exchange. In the time it's taken to return the remaining mediums are now sold out. Very disappointing REI experience despite being a member for over a decade. Solid jacket, purchase it elsewhere.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great coat for walking the dog on cold mornings/nights. The hood is perfect for keeping the wind out. I did not purchase this jacket with a lot of activity in mind. I needed a really warm and wind proof coat. On that basis, this scores a 5 for me. Design, quality and comfort all meet Marmot standards, if you own this brand. If not, I highly recommend giving them a try. Beyond clothing and outerwear, their tents and sleeping bags are hard to beat.
I purchased this "Same" Jacket 1-2 years ago. Saw the sale and for the price had to get another. Not the same jacket I purchased. Same description, same price, but not the same. They have clearly made changes to cut the cost. Cuffs are no longer adjustable with velcro, Logos are printed on, not embroidered, Hood does not have the same brim to help it hold its shape, and although it is still 700 Down Fill, it is now 80% Recycled.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] A very versatile jacket for a broad range of temperatures. Seemed to fit larger ( i ordered Medium) with room for multiple layers underneath. The all recycled materials is a big plus. The hood provides great protection with adjustability. I also found out the insulation on the outside of the arms are thicker than the inside arms area ( the part closer to your body ). Good buys and great value.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm 5'11" and 175 lbs with a 41.5-in chest and a 31-in waist. I'm typically between MEDIUM and LARGE sizes, but bought the MED of the Guides jacket base off other reviews, and it fit wonderfully. Just enough room to fit over a mid-weight fleece and not too baggy around the midsection.
