I'm primarily a walker, not a runner, and I'm concerned that the sole of the Phantom 4 is going to wear down way too quickly for my preference. The soul was so soft that a wood splinter embedded itself deeply into the sole. The shoes themselves are comfortable overall and I think they would be good for running. When I replace these next time, I will probably look for something with a more durable sole that is still good for asphalt and concrete walking. FWIW, I walk 150-200 miles a month so durability does matter to me. I did have to go up a half a shoe size from my Brooks Ghosts for the Phantom 4 to be comfortable.
As soon as I put the shoe on my foot in the store, it felt amazing, and then I took my first steps in it and it was even more amazing. I've been running in New Balance 1080s and Altra Torin 7s, and the Phantom 4s are head and shoulders above them. I originally got the Torin 7s because I needed the extra room in the toe box that they provide, and while I enjoy those shoes, because they are zero drop, even after getting acclimated to them, I still get calf pain. So I decided to try the Phantom 4s since they have a 5 mm drop. Perfect combination of the right amount of drop and a very cushioned shoe made my first run out of the box outstandingly comfortable. If you have not tried shoes with the wider toe box, I highly recommend it - you'll suddenly realize how cramped your toes have been in other running shoes. I definitely look forward to buying other pairs of Topo Athletic shoes in the future.
I have been wearing Asics Gel Kayano's for years and have been very please with them. I have lumbar spine issues due to osteoarthritis which causes lower back pain. My physician suggested moving towards a lower heel drop shoe so I tried the Topo's 5 mm drop. What a difference between them and the Gel Kayano's 9mm drop. Additionally the Phantom's sole is extremely soft which adds to the comfort. The Phantom has a nice wide toe box and fits snugly at the ankle. I can wear the Phantom's all day with a lot of walking with no back pain.
Comfortable with my bunions and well padded for longer distance walks on older feet
I have used Topo shoes before and like them. I love the wide toe box and the cushioning that they give you. The Phantom I purchased just 4 days before leaving for Spain and walking 3 different Caminos. They have 600 hundred miles on them now and still wearing well! On any one day you will be walking on trails, country roads, city streets, gravel roads and all types of terrain. And Topo handles them all
I was looking to switch to a lower heel to toe drop shoe and something with a wider toe box and discovered Topo. I work in athletics and wear a lot of men's shoes generally so went with the men's style in these as well. I'm a men's 9 / women's 10.5 and the phantom doesn't come in the 10.5 for women. I've really love these so far! Only put about 15 miles on them so far but no breaking in and they've been really comfortable. I am highly blister prone and no issues with these. I'm coming back from posterior tibial tendonitis and these have been great for that. Good amount of cushioning but not crazy like I've felt with the Hoka Bondi before. The laces are a little long and slippery so I've been double knotting them but not a big issue. Big fan of Topo so far!
Love these shoes! Comfortable, they fit my feet perfectly, and my feet stay cool. I have bunions on both feet and the wide toe box and narrow heel is exactly what the doctor ordered for my feet.
I've worn through 5 pairs of Phantom 2 and Phantom 3 and loved them. The Phantom 4 added a ton of cushion, and you can no longer feel the ground at all. It's like walking on a sponge. It's like they tried to turn it into a Hoka. If I wanted Hokas, I wouldn't be buying the Phantoms! Just returned these and am now searching for a new alternative. Such a shame they totally changed the characteristics of the Phantoms that I loved.
Comfy, cushiony, solid shoe similar to Altra shoes
I was very impressed with these. I normally run in hokas cause of heel issues. The cushioning in these is amazing. I have about 100 miles on them so far and they are still going strong.
