Not real protective soles.

These are fine for general wear out and about or in bad weather. For hiking, however, I found them to be marginal for rocky trails because the sole is thin and I felt every rock I stepped on pushing up into the bottom of my foot. After a few hours of a rocky trail in the Olympics I found my feet were tired from the rocks and roots pushing into them and the flexing of the boot sole over the terrain. If you are a serious hiker, I would recommend something with a more sturdy sole.

Casual hiker needs rock plate or more cushion

Ordered size 10, size guide 9.5 was EU 42.5 size 10 EU 43. My longest foot length is btwn 10.8, 10.9 inch, the widest is where toes connect to foot, 3.8-3.9 inches. I have low volume, (think thin like pankcake), low arches, narrower midfoot, but need wider toes box. The size 10 fit great, the built in arches are firm and hit me just right. Sometimes the arch hits my heel, but these leather cottonwoods are perfect. Its a wider toe box width than my oboz chukka, so i don'tthink stretching is necessary, (works with leather upper). Overall a great fit, better than my size 9.5 chukka. Personally i like more cushion on the front part of my feet. These are ok, a tiny bit more cushion than the Oboz chukka i bought in size 9.5, wish i got the 10 in chukka, as it feels short and i need thin socks. The chukka has little cushion for me on the front of foot and i feel sore after 1/2 hour walking. I also had to get the chukka toe box stretched to prevent rubbing on sides of toe. I bought these Cottonwood, hoping itd have more forefoot cushion, but its maybe a tiny more. Also i think read that these have a front to back drop if 8 mm or higher, so that might be why i feel more pressure on my forefoot? Ive gotten used to altra olympus cushion and zero drop/flat shoes. Hope this helps i sizing. Another review mentioned they felt every rock, so I wish these had a rock plate or more cushion, i really like the fit. I'll probably return. 5 stars bc cushioning and drop is a individual thing, so it might work for you even if not for me.
