Love it! I just used it on the John muir Trail. This coat is a crucial no brainer and one of my favorite pieces of gear to save weight without sacrificing quality and performance.
Had this jacket a few weeks now and am blown away. Pack it anywhere, sleep in it, wear it out to dinner, it’ll do it all.
I purchased this jacket as a replacement to my 800 fill Ghost Whisper. I've had several of these jackets over the years and I absolutely love them! I love the grey color of this jacket in the UL now with 1000 Fill. Fit is great and it is ridiculously light! I'd give it 5 stars but my only complaint I have is they removed the waist cinch cord from this jacket, which in my opinion was a big mistake since it helps keep the jacket tight at the waist and prevents the cold wind from finding its way into your coat. Jacket is too roomy at the waist. Also I know weight is an issue here, but a chest zippered pocket would have been bomb as well.
Overall Rating: 4/5 Fit Rating: 3 /5 MAKE SURE TO SIZE DOWN! I normally wear a Men’s L in most jackets and I had to exchange my size L for a M in the Ghost UL. The fit is baggy and does not have any cinch to reduce air volume. Pros: - Extremely Lightweight - Extraordinary warmth-to-weight ratio - Packs down small into pocket - High quality materials Cons: - Baggy fit with no cinch - Material can easily snag and rip Ideal Use Case: - Skiing - Ice climbing - Backpacking - Mountaineering The Ghost Whisperer UL is a stripped down, lighter weight version of the already ridiculously lightweight Ghost Whisperer. The Ghost Whisperer has been a staple of climbers, backpackers, and winter adventurers for years, and the UL is the next-generation of the Ghost Whisperer. The Ghost Whisper UL weighs in at 6.67 oz at 1000 fill power down, compared to the 8.8 oz and 800 fill power of the Ghost Whisperer/2. The Ghost Whisperer UL is stripped down of some of the features of the Ghost Whisperer/2, in particular the cinch at the waist that allows for tightening. This means that if the Ghost Whisperer UL is a little baggy, you will not be able to adjust the fit of the jacket. As previously mentioned, I had to size down from a Large to a Medium, and even then the fit was slightly baggy. The chest, in particular, has too much air space and can be tapered for future design improvement. I am a ski mountaineer, mountain runner, and mountaineer in Seattle, WA, with the harsh environment of the Cascades in my backyard. I took the Ghost Whisperer UL for testing on the Muir Snowfield in Rainier National Park in sub-20 degree temperatures. The Ghost Whisperer UL was a perfect down layer to stash into my touring pack, throwing it on during breaks when I needed an extra layer for warmth. The Ghost Whisperer UL is a perfect pick for a down layer that you can use down to single digit temperatures as part of your active layering system. Pack it down into its own pocket and it will literally disappear into your pack!
This is my dream super light down jacket and I wear it more than any other during the colder months. I thought the Ghost Whisperer was good until I got one of these and now I only wear the UL. It's so light it almost feels like you're not wearing anything, and at the same time its seems much warmer than similar jackets that are heavier. It's almost like an illusion because when you put it on you warm up quickly yet you don't feel like you're wearing a jacket! It's amazing and there's no excuse not to carry it with you on every mission. It's so small and light. It's more like carrying a wind shell but so much warmer ~!
Warm, light, but mine ripped on the sleeve after light wear and the down has started coming out. Shame, was a great jacket but I think it's too fragile. Let's see what MHs warrantee service is like. Will determine if I buy from them again.
The jacket is super light and pretty warm for the weight. It is a good 20-40 F jacket but due to the lightweight, it doesn't keep the heat in. So, if you happen to be caught out in a blizzard, you are going to be cold. I haven't had the pleasure of wearing a jacket while it has been windy, so I can't say much on that. I didn't rate it a 5 star because of the lightweight of the jacket. I haven't had any snags so far, but the jacket will lose feathers pretty quickly. Seems like every time I wear the jacket, I will find a loose feather or 2 poking through the jacket
Product 4.5 stars. Mountain Hardwear 2 stars. Not offering repairs for a hit in run on the slopes on their product prefer to waste the jacket and telling me to buy a new one. Environmental standards are low.
Incredibly light, true fit (large I’m 5’ 10 205) amazing product as always!
I just got this jacket for a bike packing trip in Spain and I have not even worn it yet. Be careful with the zippers, because they will rip the jacket fabric very easily. The main zipper got hung up and while I was gently trying to fix it the fabric tore. Then, the pocket zipper it got hung up on very small thread that is stitched near the zipper. I don't have time to send it back to Mountain Hardware for repairs, so I guess will need to pursue it after my trip. I'm fairly disappointed considering the cost of the jacket and the good reviews.
