Been running on these for about 100 miles now. I like them so much i am switching back to Hoka. Was running New Ballance and other shoes. I have a very wide foot and also run on steep trails and rocks. What I like about this shoe is the heel is softer than the midsole and toe. When your running down steep hills the softer heel takes some of the stress off the knee. I alternate mid, toe heel when running downhill to take the stress off but these shoes really are amazing. I don't have any negatives.
I have been a steadfast HOKA Speedgoat 5 GTX loyalist. Right out of the box the Mafate 5 feel as good as they look. If I had to choose one word it would be bouncy. They have all of the cushion of my beloved Speedgoat 5 GTX with a MUCH softer cushion with the same great Vibram grip. So much softer feel on declines. I usually get 3-4 months or 500-600 miles out of a pair of Speedgoats so I am excited to see how these hold up but the Mafate 5 has a chance to be my new favorite HOKA.
Was happy until the eyelet tore - 30 days after purchase and maybe 12 wearings. Sent them back and Hoka said outside of warranty - bad product, bad warranty, bad service. 0 for 3
The Mafate 5 are easily the most comfortable shoe I own. Coming from speedgoat 4 there is no comparison between the level of cushion these provide. Some reviews have said they ruined the Mafate with the 4 being the perfect shoe and the new version being to much "squish" but I disagree. These are prefect for my use which is combination road to trail running.
Nice looking and very comfortable but, where is the tongue? They don’t have one, which make them a little uncomfortable around the front of the ankles.
