Perfect commuting backpack for tall woman

I commute to work by bus every day and had been looking for a new backpack for awhile. I wanted room for my laptop, lunch, snacks, water bottle, book, jacket or rainshell, maybe some groceries if I stopped at the store on my way home. But I also didn't want it to be huge and flopping around when empty. As a 5'11" woman with broader shoulders, most "women's" backpacks were too short in the torso for me and straps were too close to my neck. But this Osprey pack has checked every item on my list. It's long enough that the hip straps actually sit right above my hips. The shoulder straps are set far enough apart that they aren't choking me. There is a ton of room in this bag and the roll top allows me to fit even more if I use it for grocery shopping. Look how much I was able to fit in there! I've never had a roll-top bag before, but I can never go back now! When the bag is mostly empty I can use the side compression straps to cinch it in so that it's not floppy looking. The zippered side pocket is great for keeping my keys, bus pass, and anything else I want easily accessible. The other stretch pocket easily fits my 24oz Hydroflask bottle. And I think there's room to fit a 32-oz at least, but I haven't tested that. I LOVE the zipper pulls because they are easy to hook my finger into and I don't have to fumble with them. I love that a rain cover is included, though I haven't had to use it yet. This bag has done fine so far in the Seattle spring rains. There are so many ways to adjust straps on the backpack to make it work for different situations. There is an open pocket between the main carry space and the zippered smaller pocket that is great for shoving a book or water bottle into without having to undo the roll-top. I have been singing this bag's praises to anyone who listens and one coworker wants to know if it comes in other colors so it won't be completely obvious that he has copied me.

Cycling backpack for sure

I was looking for a cycling specific backpack for bike commuting to work. I like the air channel that this pack provides. It is lightweight and that is important to me. I think the straps are very adjustable and actually enlarge or shrink the bag to your needs. Inside pockets are well thought out and easily accessible. I think the hooks instead of buckles was a smart idea as well. I hope this lasts me the next 9 years until my retirement. It seems very sturdy, so I have high hopes that it will. It also comes with features to help you deal with the rain. I think the whole concept was well thought out.

I primarily use this bag for bike commuting, and it performs well. The roll-top design doesn't obstruct my vision when I glance over my shoulder while riding. My left side zipper pocket is convenient and reachable without having to remove the backpack. The front shove-it pocket is great for holding my U-lock. There are some downsides: the bag is quite heavy at 3 pounds, the side water bottle pocket is too tight to insert a 32oz bottle, and the Airscape back panel doesn't provide adequate airflow, causing my back and its panel to sweat. I would prefer a separate compartment for my laptop and tablet, rather than sleeves in the main compartment, because items such as groceries or bike components can interfere with my devices. Despite having the bag in black, the fabric attracts and shows a lot of dust, lint, and fur.

Roll Top Not for Me

I know others praised the roll top feature of this bag, but for me, it was a deal breaker and I returned it. It’s just too complicated to quickly access the main compartment. I often stop to buy groceries or wine, etc, on the way home and this pack design would just make that way too involved. The roll top also adds to the excess of straps / rigging for a bag meant to be a daily commuter.

Great pack

Really love the versatility and ease of this pack. It’s great for bike commuting, or a weekend of travel. The zip/roll top makes packing easier, and the computer compartment and rain cover help keep everything safe and dry.
