Great backpack. Lots of space. The AirSpace lower back area is very comfortable and supportive. There are so many straps and features that I think there is everything I would need. It has a zipper to open the internal compartment from the front (I can't remember the name of this feature), so you can more easily access things buried in there without pulling everything out from the top. I'm using it primarily for carrying my rock climbing gear, and I used it today. Worked just fine. The only criticism is that the material where the shoulder straps meet was kind of rubbing against my upper back/lower neck. This could just be because I need to adjust the torso, had it overloaded, or need to break the backpack in more.
I had previously reviewed this backpack, but I need to give an update. I was hiking during my second outing with this pack and had it mostly full with my rock climbing gear. As I stepped down on the trail, the pack bounced a little due to the drop. Suddenly, one of the shoulder straps came unstitched. Of course, I will be returning it to REI, which is disappointing because I thought it was otherwise a great back. I don't know if this was just a fluke in the production process, but now I question the integrity of the rest of the stitching. I just wanted to give this update as a fair warning.
I've had my Osprey Volt for about two years now, and like all the Osprey products I've owned, it’s been a great investment. The design and technology in these newer models are truly impressive—this pack is durable, comfortable, and built to perform. It hasn’t let me down on any trip. The only downside was that my hydration reservoir tore inside the pack. I believe this was likely a manufacturing defect with the reservoir itself, not the pack. Overall, I’m really happy with this bag and would definitely recommend it to others.
Please note I am coming at this review as a seasoned AT thru hiked and Philmont ranger with over 3000 miles of trail on my old pack. Osprey replaced my old Volt 75 with this pack for free as my old one was beyond repair, and at first I was really excited for it until I noticed a few key differences between this pack and the old model. This new model does not have a stretchy section behind the pack for storing wet or dirty items. Also, does not come with trekking pole holders that are accessible while you are hiking. These were two of the most important features that I value my old backpack and I am bummed to not get them in this one. The wraparound zipper is cool in theory, but if you know how to pack your backpack, it’s a worthless feature that adds weight. Seems like it could be a great pack for beginner backpackers or maybe for a Philmont hike but as a Thru Hiker, I’m a bit disappointed.
Please note I am coming at this review as a novice day-hiker and proud owner of a pack with a grand total of 3 miles on it (around the mall). Osprey replaced my old Volt 75 with this masterpiece of innovation, and I have to say, it’s like they read my mind and improved on perfection. First off, thank God they ditched that stretchy section behind the pack! Who even wants to store wet or dirty items separately? Real hikers love that glorious mingling of swampy socks and clean gear. Plus, it’s a great way to build character. And who needs trekking pole holders that are accessible while hiking? Honestly, it’s just a waste of energy to pull out your poles when you can just trip and eat dirt like a true adventurer. Real pros know that the secret to successful hiking is making it as inconvenient as possible. The wraparound zipper? Genius. Absolute genius. Who cares if it adds weight? It’s not like you’re actually carrying the pack—gravity does most of the work. Plus, it’s perfect for that critical mid-hike rummage session where you unpack everything to find that one granola bar. In conclusion, this pack is an absolute godsend for beginners, mall-walkers, and anyone who embraces inconvenience as a lifestyle. Thru Hikers who complain just don’t get it. 10/10 would recommend.
