Size and Break-In

Purchased these primarily for walking and hiking, though also utilize as casual wear for work, etc. This pair arrived earlier than estimated for which I was grateful in that I embarked on a 2,500 mile road trip a couple of days later. Trip was for camping, hiking, sight seeing. Having completed that plus additional walks/short hikes since I can say that there were no break-in issues out of the box. Traction and stability are great. Waterproof translates into not being very breathable unfortunately. I've had many pairs of various Lowa's and this style runs 1/4" too large. That hasn't been issue so far. The tongue design is excellent for keeping rocks out. Quality looks to be good - - time will tell. Time will also tell how well they hold up. In mild wetness there was no leakage. These are spendy, though I'm happy with Innovo GTX.

Good and solid but take a long time to break in
These hiking shoes were great for the Peaks of the Balkans Trek (85 miles through rocky mountain terrain with a 22-pound pack): supportive, protective around the toe area, good grip from the treads, and kept my feet dry crossing small streams. My feet also didn't get too hot in them. That having been said, as other reviews elsewhere have noted, these shoes take a really long time to break in - in my case, probably close to 50 miles (a couple of pre-trek hikes, and then several days of trekking). And they never really loosened up width-wise. I used to have Merrills, which are super-soft out of the box. These are the opposite: they require a real commitment before wearing them on longer trails.

Needed something a little lighter for hikes where ankle protection wasn’t required. Just couldn’t get down with the squishy trail runner thing, so I gave these a try. Perfect combination of weight and protection. I’m buying another pair of stash before they change it!
