Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Wonderful!
This has proven to be the perfect shoe for standing on my feet most of the day and walking my pups! I have many issues with my feet including neuromas, bunions, plantar fasciitis, high arches!

Not long-lasting
Just as comfortable as my regular Lone Peak 8s, but the hiking version is not for a rugged hiking/trekking adventure. They came apart at the toe crease on day 2 of my 4 day trek and allowed in muddy water and dirt for the remainder. I really wanted to love these, but I had to sacrifice quality for comfort in this situation.

Good design, defective manufacture

Finding a good pair of hiking boots seems to be a full-time job, especially since most outdoor gear seems to have degraded in quality as popularity of "athleisure" wear rose in popularity. I thought I had finally found the solution with this Altra model, with seems like the perfect hybrid of hiking shoe and boot--lightweight and comfortable with good support. Although I had tried them on in the store, I ended up ordering online. only to discover a defect in one of the interior seams. Unfortunately, the seam was under one of the external grommets, right at the ankle, which made it unworkable for walking, much less hiking. The hunt continues. Hopefully Altra does a better job with quality control in their Vietnam factory next time.

Not hiking boots for skilled technical hiking

I wear altra shoes for the gym and love them. I wear them until the treadmill wears out! These boots however are dangerous and I do not recommend them for hiking especially in the white mountains in NH. There is a lot of wet rock and these have no tread. I slipped the entire two days. It was a bummer because I love this brand and my feet do too.

You can get blisters under your toenails

I just completed a 20+ mile multi day hike in these (I had broken them in don’t worry), and I developed blisters underneath both of my second biggest toes. I didn’t even know this could happen. I really like these boots, or rather I really want to like them for the whole wide toe box purpose. For reference, I’m a true size 7, but I do have narrow feet. After some research, if shoes are too big it causes your foot to slide which pushes your toenails up and down, thus causing blisters underneath the nail. I was drawn to these boots because of the wide toe box, because previous boots have given me blisters on my pinky toes. But in this case I think I think it’s a combo of toe box and length being too big. Also the laces are “slippery” and even double knots come undone so I have to tuck in the laces.

A sad return

The toe box is great for the wide footed person. However, the boot’s metal grommets press right on the bone above my ankle. It was unbearable! I kept hoping they would break in. It was a futile hope. Ugh! I finally found a boot that fit my toes! I was so sad! I am trying the Altra Timp 5 Hiker GTX instead. The boot is lower cut and doesn’t touch that part of my leg. Fingers crossed!

Would not recommend

I wear Lone Peaks for trail running. Just hiked 4000 footers in the NH White Mountains with these shoes. I would not recommend it for technical terrain like the other person mentioned. Not enough traction. Returned item

Not waterproof!

These boots were not waterproof. They don't even seem water resistant. I consider this unacceptable given the price point (and description as waterproof), so I gave a 1-star rating. Other negatives would be that they caused some mild ankle discomfort and aren't very sturdy or supportive. Positives include the wide toe box and overall fit. Unfortunately, though the boots fit well, they're not very functional for me.

Tripping hazard

These adorable , comfy boots became an immediate tripping hazard since the gromlet hooks protrude out to the side and easily catch the lace or fabric as foot swings, through. Had many trips, then a bad face first fall so returning. I found the foot part comfy but the ankle support was painful as it pressed hard into my medial malleoli ( ankle prominence) as i needed this boot to help support very pronated feet.
