Gerber makes good knives but isn't known to make great knives. The MagnaCut Strongarm Camp is the exception. The MagnaCut Strongarm Camp feels light in the hands and is easily manipulated. The edge will take hair whittling sharpness and hold on to that edge even after abuse. I hope that Gerber will offer all their knives with MagnaCut blade upgraded options. The price for this knife in MagnaCut is well worth paying the extra price without the overinflated cost of this other knives behind the glass at sporting goods stores.
When Compared to the Gerber Model 475 Cushion grip. "The blade is shorter, the handle is shorter, and the blade thickness is thinner. And yet with all these factors the Model 475 Cushion grip still manages to be lighter weight." With the tomato test, the magna cut blade was somehow both sharper and not as sharp as the 1970's/1980's counterpart. "To initiate the tomato cut the blade did not want to slice as well as the Model 475 though when the cut began, and a smooth constant pressure and speed was applied, did effortless slice the tomato with easy. Though if too little or too much pressure was applied, the blade would not match the Model 475." Can't wait for a field dressing test, if I am able this year. Four stars as this is my first MagnaCut blade and I am overall impressed with the MagnaCut and the price point when compared to competitors.
With the coupon this came to about $112. that's a pretty incredible price for a magnacut steel blade. I think the closest you get from Benchmade or Buck is twice the price for magna cut. so that coupled with the Gerber warranty seems like pretty darn good deal. the blade itself is exactly what I wanted. fixed blade. perfect hand size. I can carry with me on hikes and runs in case I get attacked by a cougar then it's stabby time.
The correct dimensions and weight of this knife as measured on a recently-purchased unit are: 8.75" overall, 3.9" maximum blade length, 3.45" edge length (measured linearly parallel to the spine), 0.125" spine width, 4.6 oz weight (knife only). For those who don't know, MagnaCut steel has much greater edge retention but less toughness than 420HC which is the steel in the other variant of the Gerber StrongArm Camp knife. It isn't often that a blade is offered in more than one steel so that consumers can choose which material might be better suited to their particular applications within their preferred knife models. The as-received edge angle (inclusive) on the MagnaCut blade is 30 degrees, a good compromise for edge retention vs resistance to chipping. The blade is sharp right out of the box, although the edge is not highly polished. The handle is very "grippy" and its circumference and length are good for my normal-sized hands. I like the finger notch because it allows me to place my middle finger there and place my index finger really far forward on the spine for fine control. I could wish that the edge were a bit longer, but the present design is certainly adequate for its purpose.
Outstanding knife. Took this knife on my recent family hunting trip and never needed to sharpen it until I got home! I was able to field dress and skin an elk, deer, and 4 turkeys all while remaining sharp! The ergonomics and grippyness of the handle made gutting very easy to maintain the grip and control the knife even when wet and bloody. My wife hunts too and now she wants one of these knives also. It took longer to sharpen than my non magnasteel knives, but I was able to get back to a shaving sharp edge. Totally worth the little extra sharpening effort to have a knife that can handle so much before it needs resharpening! I couldn’t be happier with this knife and it’s performance, especially considering how the cost compares to a lot of other magnacut steel blade knives on the market
A perfect fit and collection to my fixed blade knives. Great feel and great edge.
Great knife. Came sharp and you can't beat magnacut
