Considerably uncomfortable running shoes. I've owned a pair of Altra's in the past and these are overpriced for the quality of materials. There is no shock absorption in this cement-running soul. The mesh of the fabric is so open that these shoes will fill with rocks and debris! Lastly, a ton of pressure is placed on the top of the foot when the laces are lose and even more so when they are tied properly. The color detail applied to the outside looks like it's sprayed on with a thin layer of paint that will wear off quickly. The wide toe box is the only great thing about this shoe. Plenty of room for all the rocks you'll be running with between your toes.
I was a bit apprehensive initially but I actually really like these and look forward to wearing them. These are super comfortable. I tried on a variety of different styles and brands and like these the best. These may be the most nice feeling pair of shoes I’ve ever purchased. I use them for interval training and some weight training. The tow box is wide enough but not obnoxious. I like the cushioning. I agree that the openness of the material may be problematic on a place like a trail (or in rain) but these aren’t trail running shoes and I don’t exercise in the rain. Watch out for curbs, I scuffed them on my first time out with them in the wild. I do like these a lot.
My feet are 260 mm or 10 inches (barefoot) to 10.2 inches (with socks) and the W9.5/EU40.5 fits perfectly. These Escalante Racers are especially breathable with the mesh construction. I’ve struggled with blisters in Nike, New Balance, Brooks, and Skoras. I used to think my feet were just prone to blistering when running beyond a mile…until I tried Altras. Now I can run 5 miles and don’t get any blisters. So much room for the toes to splay properly. Couldn’t be happier :D
The top is an open mesh which I didn’t realize. Tiny rocks
