Super solid and easy to use!
Installing the StageTwo was pretty easy—had it set fully set up in about an hour as the clear instructions and well-packed box made the process super smooth. This is my first hitch bike rack and experiencing how solid this thing is has set a good precedent for any future vehicle equipment rack purchases. It feels extremely secure, evening when driving around at highway speeds or over rough terrain in my pickup truck; little to no sway and the rack holds firm. One of the more standout features has to be the integrated cable locks, which add a nice layer of security when having to leave bikes unattended, although you can double up your locks with an addition metal loop in between the racks. The cables can be a bit tricky to attach to smaller bikes due to their placement, though. The three positions you can tilt the rack allows for easy access to the rear of whatever vehicle you're putting this on, but I found it wasn't too necessary for my truck's tailgate's clearance. I found attaching the rack to the hitch pretty unique. I have never used Yakima hitch attachable equipment before, so perhaps this is the norm. You tighten a hand knob which expands the male end of the rack into the hitch for a secure fit, which seems a bit suspect, but it holds tight and I guess we always have the safety pin to rely on. I haven't found the built-in bottle opener yet (apparently it has one according to the website), but overall, this rack is very rugged, easy to use, and well-designed. If you're looking for a durable and versatile bike rack for your vehicle, then this is a great option.
A good and heavy duty rack
This rack so far has been fantastic. It’s easy to assemble, easy to use, holds the bike securely, and seems very heavy duty. When it was delivered it had me a little worried because the box was in poor condition. It was obvious the shipping company didn’t treat it nicely, including the last ten feet to my front door where it was slid across the ground, evidenced by the trail through some snow along side the front sidewalk. But the contents were unharmed. It is packaged very well. When you unpack it have a scissors or knife handy as all the parts are taped securely in place. Also each part is in its own plastic bag so you will have a number of plastic bags to recycle. Assembly was relatively easy. The instructions are very good, just be sure to follow them in order and it will make it easier on you. It should take about 10 to 20 minutes for most people. The bike trays need to be bolted on and use hex socket heads. They include an “L” Allen key as the bolt heads are security type hex sockets. Meaning the Allen wrench needs a hole in it in order to fit into the head. The included Allen wrench works ok, but a ratchet works better if you have security bits. The instructions include torque specs, but they are in N-m, which isn’t as common as ft-lbs in the U.S. Both would have been nice, but it’s an easy online search to convert them. That is if you own a torque wrench. I wager most people don’t, so a qualitative description along with the torque spec would be nice. But to give you an idea, the tray bolts get tightened down hard. The hook arms get tightened down firmly so they don’t move easily by themselves. This is where I had a slight problem because one of them tightened down to the torque spec but was still loose. Turns out the bolt was binding slightly, but if I turned it a little more it loosened and then could be turned more until it tightened all the way. The bolts also have lok-tite applied to them so they should stay put once they are tight In use, the speed knob is awesome! You insert the rack into the hitch receiver, insert a pin, spin the knob down tight, lock it with the key and you’re done. Super easy and no hitch bolt to tighten with a wrench every time, like my last rack. It holds very securely. Tugging and pushing there is no play at all. The bikes are also easy to secure. Put the bike in the tray. Rotate the hook arm up to an inch or closer to the front wheel or fork and push the locking mechanism down so it is tight. Then connect the strap around the rear wheel and you are done. The bike is held very securely. The tilt feature is nice also. The handle to disengage the mechanism and allow it to tilt is easy to get to and use. Then you just lower while supporting it so it doesn’t drop too fast. But be warned it is a little heavy when you pull it back up to level. There are also integrated cable locks, but they really need to be to about six inches longer. They are still useable on my bike but not as convenient as they could be. But there is a welded bracket to connect you own lock to. The rack is heavy! About 60 lbs. It uses a heavy gauge tubing and the welds look very good. But because of how the weight is distributed I found it relatively easy to take off and put back on the car. The rack will also fold up against the car when not in use. And for my CR-V it doesn’t block any of the lights when folded up. In order to see if it fits your vehicle you need to make some measurements and use this guide: http://yakweb-assets.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/HitchFitTips.pdf Overall this rack is fantastic and there is very little negative that I can say about it.
Well thought out & sleek: a rack of all trades!
This rack is fantastic: ergonomic, secure, and well thought out. It's strong enough to keep your bikes steady, but sleek enough that there's no added road noise post install. The handle release mechanism for folding it up and locking it in various positions is very ergonomic to operate. The rack features a lock that secures the rack to your hitch. There are also small built in bike locks for each bike for added theft-mitigation. Notwithstanding this feature, I would still plan on locking your bikes to the rack with added independent bike lock as they appear that the integrated locks appear as if they could be cut through fairly easily. For those that want to do just that, Yakima installed a thick metal band in the stem of the rack in between the trays to secure the lock to. (This is one of my favorite features!) The rack also folds up nicely when not in use though this does block the back-up camera on my CRV. Trunk can be easily opened with rack installed. Overall, this rack is functional, durable, and sleek. No major cons. Its well thought out and adventure ready!
Well made and easy to use bike rack.
The Yakima rack was easy to assemble- put together in about 15 minutes. The rack is 70 lbs so was too heavy for me to lift and put on the hitch by myself. It was easily done with 2 people. Mounting and dismounting bikes was quick and easy. The rack comes with locks so it can be locked to the hitch and the bikes can be locked to the rack. When not in use the rack is easy to fold up close to the vehicle- useful in parking lots and garages. It feels well made and held the 2 bikes very securely.
Heavy and poorly engineered
The release lever is poorly engineered and does not lock into place. I hit a bump at low speed and the lever released, causing the rack to drop to its lowest level and striking the road. Luckily the bikes are OK, but it leaves me suspicious of putting any bikes on it again. I'll be returning this.
Really nice, heavy duty rack
I like this rack a lot. It's very sturdy and secures bikes well. The two bike trays at different heights helps avoid contact between bikes. It is easy to assemble and to install in the receiver. The locking mechanism is nice. The integrated bike locks are great. My only complaint, is that it doesn't look like there is a way to secure the arms when not in use. I used the straps for the rear wheels to hold the arms down, but it doesn't look like this was intended to work this way.
Great Bike Rack
This is my first bike rack so I don't have anything to compare it to. I'm hoping it's my last bike rack so I did a lot of research before buying it. I've been using it for almost two months now and love it. I didn't put it together, my dad did but rumor has it the YouTube video from yakima is clear and easy to follow. Rack itself is great. I've put a lot of miles on it and no issues. Bikes are easy to load, they're secure and I don't have to worry about them getting stolen. Highly recommend the rack. I love it.
Stable and secure
So far I’m very happy with the Yakima stage two. It holds my fat bike without any additional parts or straps. Very stable and simple to install. Overall great quality and has nice clean look. The feature that sold me on this is the integrated lock/ chain loop for additional security. One negative would be the integrated locking cables. They are too short and will only work with a suspension fork with an arch or looped through the front wheel. It won’t reach my bike frame. I would recommend.
