You can wear the stretchy, sweat-wicking REI Co-op Active Pursuits men's shorts the way you want. They're unlined and have a convertible waistband drawstring that can be tied internally or externally.

Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Impressive update
These shorts are like a dream! Exceptional comfort, lightweight design, and versatility - making them perfect for various activities like running, hiking, and biking. The fact that you don't even notice wearing them is a great testament to their comfort. The practical design of the front pockets, including a zippered one large enough for an iPhone, eliminates the need for back pockets. They're also suitable for casual wear, making them a fantastic all-around choice. I bought all the colors.
Please offer in 9 inch inseam!
These shorts are very nice. I only wish they came in a 9 inch inseam. 7 inch inseam I feel is too short for working out at the gym (other than cardio). Like that no liner. Please offer these in a 9 inch option too!!!!
Supremely comfortable
I bought these shorts for tennis as I've been struggling to find anything suitable for that sport from my traditional sportswear company. It feels like wearing nothing at all, and I'm old enough now where that sensation doesn't alarm me. Moisture-wicking, seemingly odor resistant, large pockets and they come in earthy colors that I prefer. I bought two more pairs after trying out the first.
miss the liner of the previous version
Very comfortable and breathable shorts. Shorts have deep pockets and secure phone, keys and wallet better than the older shorts. I only wish these also had the liner.
Highly recommend
I purchased a set of the shirt and shorts to replace some old exercise clothes. Tried them out and they are better than any others I have so when they were on sale again for 4th of July I bought another two of each. I have tried other brands and none seem to fit as well and the price is good, especially when on sale. I am 6’3” and about 195 pounds, 34 inch waist and the mediums in both were perfect. Good movement in the shorts, shorter but not too short. Medium Shirt slightly on the tight side but I felt perfect for working out vs. vs looser in the large.
Too baggy
The shorts run larger than normal. I wear a large in almost every short and these seem very baggy and loose around the waist. Size down if you are between sizes.
Finally shorts that do the job!
I have been looking for a pair of women’s shorts that are practical for backpacking. I don’t want skimpy shorts that are more of a fashion statement. I also was looking for light weight shorts that dried quickly and were at least 7” inseam. And no gusset. Men have these available in spades. Finally, a REI associate found a pair of these. Thank you for going the extra mile. I tried them on. They fit. Very comfortable. So I took them out for a ‘test drive’ and I was super happy with them. Bought two more pairs just in case they go away. As yet I haven’t backpacked with them, so I’m not sure how they’ll do on rocky terrain when sliding down on one’s butt. I’ll see. Designers - women don’t always want skimpy fashion shorts.
Nice, comfy shorts for workouts or hanging out
I recently bought these to use mostly for hiking and trail running local trails. They are very comfy and stretchy, and fit well. I'm currently sort of between a size Medium & a Large, and these fit perfectly, which likely means they size slightly on the big side. The pockets are deep enough that I have no fear of losing stuff while jogging, but not so deep that I feel like my phone is banging around either. I prefer unlined shorts so I can use boxer briefs or compression shorts under, depending on temperature and where I'm at physically, and really appreciate that feature on these, and that the REI site makes it easy to figure this aspect out. We'll see how these wear over time, but REI branded stuff does tend to be pretty robust and long-lasting.
Look and fit great with light, buttery feel
Fit to size, just the right length for workouts and running, feel soft and airy, dry fast. I'd prefer there was no (REI) logo on the shorts or if it was more subtle like gray on gray.
Great pair of shorts
I’m very picky about the shorts I wear, and it’s usually tough to find a pair that checks all my boxes for comfort and functionality. These shorts definitely meet my criteria. They’re comfortable, flexible, and versatile enough for swimming, hiking, running, exercising—basically anything I throw at them. I recently wore them on a week-long canoeing trip, and they performed incredibly well in all conditions. My only piece of feedback is that I wish they had a back pocket. Other than that, these are pretty much the perfect shorts
