The Black Diamond Solution Jacket is a top-tier mid-layer for climbers, blending lightweight warmth and unrestricted mobility. Its 20D recycled nylon shell, paired with 60g PrimaLoft Gold Eco insulation, provides excellent heat retention without weighing you down, perfect for cold crags or windy ridges. A PFC-free DWR finish repels light rain, while stretch knit cuffs and a cordlock hem keep the elements at bay during high-output moves. Compact enough to pack into its own pocket, it’s easy to carry, making it a reliable, high-performing companion for all-season climbing with stellar windproofing and eco-conscious design.
Fits very well and lightweight. Packs easily in left side pocket. The wrist charge of material is great touch to the hoody.
I have worn this hoody pretty extensively now - I wanted to support BD's efforts toward safer chemistry products and more suitable materials and the Solution seemed like the perfect fit for an insulation "shell"/layer. I was most surprised when I wore it ice climbing recently - the jacket did a wonderful job of shedding/beading water on a couple high flow routes - I ended up wearing it as a stand alone all day with a jacket similar to the first light underneath. I would wear this as a mid layer on the coldest days or just as a rugged do it all jacket from rock to ice anytime its needed. I also wear it around town. I really appreciate the zippers on this jacket - they are very sturdy and solid. Hardly take it off - love it.
I had the solution from like 5 years ago in medium, I bulked a little since then so I finally had to size up. The first one was my go to all around thermal jacket and layer under a shell. It was used for 5 years and it’s still going strong, made it through Kilimanjaro, the Appalachian Trail, snowboarding, and many seasons of climbing rock and ice. The new one should get its fair share of use too. Would recommend. Currently 5’8” and 180lb, large fits good. Medium fits me well under 160lbs.
I really love this jacket. It's incredibly light, but still surprisingly warm. I've warn it as a warm midlayer snowboarding at the resort as well as splitboarding. I like the water repellent outer fabric which allows me to wear it without a shell in light snow and still stay dry. I'm in the Pacific Northwest, so this was important to me. If I was in a drier climate I might have picked something like the first light hoody, but for me this was exactly what I wanted.
Once again, a nice product, but just doesnt fit right. I am 6’, 175 lbs. The large jacket I ordered should fit properly for a normal build like mine. The chest and shoulder area is annoyingly tight. The length is fine, but a jacket should not prevent you from bending over and tightening your boot buckles for example. I would have ordered an XL but it would be to big around the belly. Not sure who this is designed for. Nice jacket other than that.
Like the other reviews, this jacket is very warm, windproof, lightweight. Great for skiing, even on cold days. Bonus -- I live in a ski town and it's perfect out on the town as well. But -- otherwise ideal for the skin track or crag, this jacket lacks the large interior pockets for stashing skins, gloves, hat, etc.
High quality- but fits is about 1/2 size too small. I’m usually an xl, and this fits more like a large. I can’t layer much underneath beyond a shirt. Don’t enjoy that. Very high quality fabric though. More burley than my old nano puff.
Purchased the jacket to take with me on travel and hiking adventures. Wanted something light, compactable, warm, with a hood and some water repellency. Looks good and fits well as it preforms as I hoped.
This one’s my new favorite belay jacket. Great for when it’s a little chilly and breezy but you’re standing in one spot. All my friends were jealous haha. Would definitely recommend
