I really wanted to love the Kelty Daydreamer 6-person tent because there are definitely some great things about it. It’s super easy to set up, and the blackout material really does an awesome job of blocking sunlight perfect for sleeping in after sunrise. Unfortunately, the rainfly is a major issue. My first tent had holes all over the rainfly, so I contacted Kelty. They did send me a replacement after I cut up the old one, but the new one actually has even more holes. That’s a huge problem when it rains, and it’s really disappointing given Kelty’s reputation for quality. I’ve always trusted this brand, but this experience left me frustrated and let down. Hopefully, they can improve the rainfly because otherwise this tent has great potential.
There's one top vent, while the rest of the tent relies on side vents and airflow from under the vestibule, so ventilation can be less than optimal with the rainfly on. Still, it did well in blocking light, and colder and breezy weather can make this tent feel cozy. When the morning sun shined, the tent blocked most of the light, but it got toasty fast. There were also some pin-sized holes spread randomly throughout the rainfly, but water didn't seem to leak through when it was hose tested in the backyard. The deal breaker is when I spotted some water marks when packing it up from its first camp trip and then confirming that the back floor seams leak at home. It could have received a lemon, but for those looking to get this tent, test those seams with a hose to make sure this is good for the long haul. If this didn't leak, I'd rate it a 4/5! Oh yeah, 20ft aluminum poles work on the Daydreamer 6, and they're lighter and better than the stock ones.
This was overall easy to set up, but there's a significant design flaw. The Velcro on the rain fly has the rough side facing the tent. When we wanted to open it slightly to get some air, the rough Velcro scratched the bug netting. We're unfortunately going to return it
This is a high-quality tent that's easy to set up and is more spacious than I was expecting. I was able to set it up by myself even as a fairly short person. I first used it in a rainy campsite in the redwoods and it kept me dry and warm. Then I used it in the desert (with a pop-up over it) and the blackout rain fly did an excellent job of keeping the light out. I'm not sure if it was the pop-up or the blackout rain fly, but it was cooler inside the tent in the desert than it would have been in a regular tent. It's nice that it has the option to open large windows on the front and back to let in air flow and light when you want to. It fit both a long wide duo and a medium single Exped Megamat with room to spare. I think it would be possible to fit two long wide mats in it. It's also quite tall; I'm 5'3 and had plenty of clearance to stand up straight.
I am giving a 4 star only because we haven't camped with it yet. Overall, we are very pleased with our purchase. For a 6 man tent, it is lightweight and packs compact. Set up is a breeze, 1 person can do it with ease. The rainfly is easy to install and the vestibule will come in handy for overflow gear. I like the gear storage loft at the ceiling. Not only does it hold lightweight gear, it acts as a compression ring to give some stability to the tent poles. I also appreciate the color coding system for the foot print. My sweetie will be using it next week on a 10 day retreat so I am interested in her feedback when she returns
I was skeptical buying this with no reviews, but it was a great deal during the annual sale, so I took the chance and I absolutely love this tent, especially the blackout aspect. Woke up at 8am and thought it was the middle of the night still! The white “hammock” for the roof is perfect, put my lantern in there and it diffuses the light beautifully. Good space, I fit a queen air mattress comfortably with plenty of room for all my gear. Only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it rained heavily and I did get some water seeping through the floor, but I have since ordered the footprint to go with it so will have to try that out and see if it makes a difference. Very easy setup, I am a 5’6 female and was able to easily set it up myself in about 15 minutes.
The tent is super easy to set up even by yourself. It is as dark as they say with the heavy rain cover. Only thing I can see with this one is, it wouldn't be great for warmer to hot weather camping with the rainfly on...The rainfly is heavy and black underneath, so it absorbed and retains heat when zipped up completely... The window is huge and has its own rainfly zipper, it would be a better set up if there was a canopy pole to hold it up over the window and door if it's warm and raining though.. Awesome cool weather tent for sure..
Lots of room and headroom for standing and changing. Easily fits a xl size cot and a twin blowup mattress and a portable ac unit for when we go car camping. So far no leaks in 2 pretty strong rainstorms where the extra allowed us to comfortably hang out and play games and cool and eat. With both sides open lots of good airflow for those cool fall and spring days.
Was looking for "blackout" tent for daytime naps and this fills the bill. Truly dark inside even in the sun. I can set it up by myself (I'm 5' 10") with one trick: after the poles and inner tent are set, connect the rainfly with the two rear (light green) clips to the tent, then tie a 20' line to one of the rainfly front door tiedown straps on the opposite side. Throw the line over the top (rear to front) and with the inner door open, stand inside the tent and pull the line to haul the rainfly up and over the tent. Great that the rainfly opens up front and back for air circulation. The blackout feature is also nice at night when neighbors have bright lights or when camped near a brightly lit bathroom. The tent seems plenty sturdy to stand up to wind (rainfly on and fully staked out) although I have yet to test it in windy conditions. Highly recommended.
I hope the tent is worth the long shipping times. REI should have notified me of the vendor delays and let me pick up the new set from there store instead.
