Masterpiece of design and construction

I travel a lot by plane and by car. For plane “personal item” and around town use, I have long used daypacks in the 15-22 liter range. My recent three-week trip to Europe proved Topo Designs Mountain Cross bag to be a far superior choice. One shortcoming of most daypacks is organization.—too few pockets snd one big pocket where things fall to the bottom and can be hard to access. In contrast, the Mountain Cross has four interior zippered compartments of varying capacities. They are lined in bright yellow. There are two exterior bottle pouches perfect for REI’s small nalgenes. Larger bottles can easily fit in an interior pocket. Two buckled straps on the exterior bottom can hold a rolled jacket, small tripod, or an extra-tall bottle. (Hack: when not using bottom straps, buckle them crosswise to keep them from dangling.) There is also an exterior front flat picket that’s perfect for stuffing an iPhone, Airpods, receipts, tickets, etc. for quick access. The bag holds an amazing quantity of gear. Because I often check my standard carry-on sized bag, on planes I like to keep all essentials and a change of clothes with me in my “personal item.” I use the largest zippered pocket for clothing, the next largest for electronics (this pocket has an internal zippered pocket for small items also), the back pocket for passport, important documents, occasionally a Kindle. The small front pocket has snacks, basic toiletries, and miscellany. When around town or on short hikes, the bag carries whatever I’ll need for my day: rain gear, small umbrella, camera, binoculars, warm layers, food, etc. The bag has great zippers with corded pulls, usually two-way. They operate easily one-handed. The removable shoulder strap is best used crossbody, which allows comfortable back or side carry and easy swing to front fir access. It also has grab handles for hand carry. A variety of external loops offer carabiner use and ID attachment points. The bag resists dirt well. I used it all day, every day for three weeks, on the ground, boat decks, airplane floors, etc., and it never looked dirty. I hand washed it after returning. The construction quality is top notch. No loose threads or fabric, reinforced seams, durable materials suited for each bag location. This bag is now my all-purpose travel and day bag for every purpose except long hikes and backpacks. I probably won’t use it cycling, but it could serve a messenger bag role.

Freakin Great

I'm freakin delighted with this bag! I hummed and haaed over it for literally months before I pulled the trigger, but I'm so glad I did. I have a weird demand of my bags (backpack, duffels, handbags, whatever) that they serve particular purposes. Sure, I have some bags just cause they're pretty but I travel a LOT internationally for work, so a single bag/backpack/fanny pack whatever usually has to serve multiple functions. For this, it couldn't JUST be a laptop bag, it also needed to serve as a hiking bag for 5+/- miles, a work bag for carting around work gloves and a radio, but with enough organization that I knew where things were (I love pockets.) This bag is all of that plus. I've been using a Patagonia mini messenger (from 2015) to serve this purpose and it's a great bag, but at 12L it's become too small for my life. But I worried the Topo Designs bag would be too big. Nope! It's smaller on the body than it looks in nearly all the photos I examined, but somehow still fits my laptop discreetly, plus a buuunch of other things (wallet, reusable bags, pills, sunscreen, lady things, first aid kit, leatherman, etc) and I have so much space left. It's comfortable to carry but I will get a waist/hip strap for hiking just to secure it to my body (Tom Binh has some nice straps for this). I've only used it lightly but I can tell it's the perfect replacement for my small Patagonia bag which I will finally retire, and means when I'm traveling heavy (often) I can have my laptop and electronics in this bag and not my backpack. If you need a smart, compact but spacious laptop bag for all things, get this. One note - the water bottle pockets are not spacious which I prefer, it keeps this bag low profile. My 24oz Nalgene fits easily inside the bag and the zippers are high quality so easy to get to it. In these side pockets I put my leatherman on one side and sunglasses on the other. Perfect.

Water bottel pokets are tiny.

The bag is okay. Water bottel pokets are tiny. It was a struggle to fit my normal-sized coffee thermos in the pocket, and no way could I fit any of my water bottles. The max size is probably a 12 oz bottle. The main reason I got this bag was for the two external water bottle pockets, so this was a deal breaker for me. The rest of the bag was okay, but I thought the inside space was divided up into too many organizational compartments. I returned.

.excellent cross body bag.

I love bags and despite owning many, this is my favorite. It is so thoughtfullly designed with a luggage pass through, internal organization that makes sense, and security closing on the external pocket. A good size for carrying an ipad.
