Best watch in its class !
Very good watch. It does everything I need from it and its at a really good price point. The only watch that really competed with this one is the Apple Watch. However, unlike the Apple Watch, this watch has much better battery life and is more sports oriented. I know most people want to compare it to a Garmin, but for 350, with navigation, offline maps, GPX support, HR, AMOLED, and a premium construction, it is hard to directly compare it with a watch Garmin offers that supports all of the above and at this price point. I am subtracting one star because there are a few software things I wish Suunto would add. Maps to lock always north, battery mode customization (ability to use offline maps in other battery modes), and more 3rd part app support to name a few. If Suunto would work out some software features, this would be a 5 out of 5 watch. Even as is, it's an easy recommendation for 90% of people.
Suunto does it again.
Best HR/GPS watch! I got this from Santa! He knows what I want and need. I had my last Suunto spartan watch for 8 years and it is still working and I handed it down to my son. The Race watch is very nice and way more readable and a better system than the old watch. I like it for its long lasting battery 🔋. I have gone on longer gravel rides and it has lasted days. My old watch had to be changed daily.
Beautiful build quality and features I care about.
Less feature packed than similarly priced Garmin watches (except for the fact that this watch includes maps, which you can't get for the price with Garmin if you want AMOLED screen, or at all perhaps at $350), but that may be appreciated if you're like me. I wasn't looking for a watch that had a thousand different metrics and data fields for everything under the sun. I just wanted a nice watch that can track my runs, hikes, and bikes, with a nice look and feel to it. As someone who had a Garmin Forerunner 935 for many years and had no complaints at all about it, I was very excited to change it up for the more premium feel and simplified user experience. So far, I love my Race S. I just hope Suunto continues to support it and rebuild their brand in the coming years.
Incredible, beautiful watch!
After using watches from Garmin (that were almost triple the price), Coros and Suunto, I have finally found my favorite watch. First all, this watch is gorgeous on the wrist. It feels like a quality timepiece, it looks classy without a lot of flash, and it's made in Finland. It does everything I was looking for, and needed, without all the extra stuff that I found I never used to begin with. The flashlight feature is great, not as bright as Garmin's dedicated light, but bright enough to find lost keys in a dark tent or climb dark stairs when putting a toddler back to bed. The AMOLED screen is gorgeous with tons of clarity and brightness. I found this watch to be much easier to read while out running than my Epix. The battery won't last weeks, but I'm getting a solid 5 days of everyday use and the charger is not only simple to connect, but quick to charge. The gravel gray band looks super cool and unique, and I love Suunto's pin system to keep the extra at bay. It tracks sleep, activities, steps, anything and everything I need. I even used the pace feature for a recent 5K and it was incredible. It basically buzzed and gave me a "speed up" or "slow down" to keep me at the pace I was trying to run the race. Which ultimately left me with a personal best time. I really can't say enough good things about this watch. Time will tell on the quality and longevity, but right now it's impressed the heck out of me and I can't wait to wear and use it daily. The ONLY thing I'll be on the lookout for is a titanium version with a sapphire glass. Otherwise, this watch is a keeper for a long time!
Don’t believe the couple bad reviews
This is a solid watch. My everyday wear is a Garmin Fenix 8 but I picked this Suunto Race S up out of curiosity and reading rave reviews from Desfit and DCRainmaker. Just got back from my first run with it and it performed admirably. Feels fairly premium on the wrist and did the most of the things you expect a sport watch to do although I can see DCRainmaker’s point about only being able to have a couple “sports apps” activated at once being a huge negative (I’m taking one star off for that reason alone although, given the stellar price, I’m still tempted to give it five stars). That being said, it’s a heck of a lot better than the Apple Watch for running. One positive that really stood out for me though was the ability for the watch to write “Cardio Fitness” metrics to my Apple Health app (not sure why Garmin can’t do the same) although I can’t imagine anybody else would care about such a specific thing. As odd as it may sound, I plan on actually holding onto this watch and using it for runs in addition to, or in place of, my Garmin. Which is saying something if you knew how many different sport watches I’ve tried over the last several years and are waiting to be re-sold (Withings, Polar, Apple, etc).
Amazing Watch
So much better than my Garmins!! Granted I have always had entry level Garmins, but the features, battery life, and overall look are 10x better.
figure on a lifetime of buying straps!!
This is a review of suunto ambit 3 watch and the company itself. i rarely write reviews, but was compelled to do this one after my watch strap has broken for the third time since i purchased the watch in 2018. I use this watch for running and always rise the watch and strap off afterwards. The strap is maybe a silicone material. and I am now at $225 (three x $75) for watch straps--fast approaching the initial cost of the watch itself. There was a time a few years back when one could call suunto and talk to a person. Now, customer service is pretty much non-existent. Were I able to talk to a person, I would ask how they justify charging $75 for such lousy watch bands!! I vow never to buy a product from this company again...buyer-beware! Figure on buying new straps every years or so--as soon as the warranty has expired (they know the straps are bad!)
Rough start, but things got better
I had some of the same start-up issues that have already been mentioned. Trouble pairing, several rounds of software updates and had to factory reset about three times. Unfortunately, Suunto’s support is less than favorable. Chat is the only option and I would say that my experience wasn’t super great. However, I was able to get past the start-up issues and the watch has been great. I love the display and ease of navigating through the features. I also love the ability to completely disable notifications - which was an issue with my Garmin Fenix 6. I think the app interface is pretty good - proving tons of metrics that analyze your performance, health, recovery and training status. Overall, I’m very happy with the Race S.
Massively lacking. Does not perform very well
1. music controls don't work due to the new update. 2. the wrist HR sucks, so I only use a HR chest strap. This watch can't handle accuracy even with the chest strap. randomly drops the connection and is generally all over the place with HR. 3. The app is massively lacking when compared to Garmin. 4. Lag. it's super laggy when simply scrolling through menus even. all-in-all, Garmin is definitely overvalued, but still worth it. everything just works, and I'm still using an old gen 1 Instinct from about 6 years ago. The Suunto can't even handle the basic standard fitness watch capabilities that the rest seem to handle no problem. Lezyne, Polar, Garmin, and even TomTom have performed better for me over the years than this Suunto. Really been trying to give this thing a chance for the last 2-weeks, but can barely get through a single run without some kind of glitch. Not impressed and do not recommend.
Lacking a lot of standard features
No 3d distance tracking in trail mode. Effort pace only available in preset trail mode within a data page. Cannot be customized at all No web version of the app cannot cycle back through data page, only forward does not show direction of the GPX track No navigate back cannot flip screen for wearing on right wrist no track running mode
