Very well made, sturdy everyday mountain short
Cute, sturdy shorts for general summer adventuring. Wear these frequently for running, hiking, scrambling, climbing, and even yoga/gym. The material is pretty thick--thicker than previous years' iterations of this short. It has great abrasion resistance, which I need for climbing and scrambling especially. The inseam is a good length--long enough to prevent chafing and stay put under a harness. The inside of the hems have a grippy material that helps further with holding everything in place. Shorts are super stretchy for good range of motion. Pockets on each side are well placed and hold your phone snugly. My only request is honestly that these come in more colors—I'd snap up a few more pair.
Best running shorts evet!
I absolutely LOVE these shorts! The length is perfect to protect you from chafing, and they stay in place thanks to the little silicone pads in the legs. The pockets are great! They have a lot of space for your phone, gels, etc., and the shorts still stay in place! I have tried so many running shorts, and these ones are my favorites so far!
Great pockets, but stretches quickly
I bought these as my main pair of hiking and running shorts and the first hike (~30 km) they were great! But after the first wash - I was careful not to dry - I found that they did not retain their shape. I am now about 20 runs into these shorts and find that they're frequently sliding up as I run which has resulted in some chafing :( They fit comfortably snug when first purchased, definitely a bit disappointed that they stretched so quickly. I will echo everyone else though and say that the pockets are fabulous and the quality of material seems strong (no ripping or tears!). Probably won't purchase again unfortunately.

Best shorts to for a complete running quiver
These shorts are my favourite running shorts ever because they are a wonderful "tool" to add to anyone's running quiver. They can be worn as a simple pair of shorts, or function as a running belt for those days when you want to carry a flask or a small stowable layer, phone, gel and keys. I also love the possibility to carry an extra flask in there when going for a longer mission that requires a trail vest. The fit is great and bounce is minimal. I'm a 170cm, 68kg athletic fit and a size 6 works well. Durability is great! I've had these since their first iteration (since the old back pocket & without the grip dots) and they last. A few notes: Just need a bit of care when washing/drying with the tape seams that will come undone faster if not hang-dried. The first version of the Essent shorts had a different seam in the front which I found way more comfortable as this one lands in a strange spot for me and becomes uncomfortable some days, but not enough to want another short.
Highly Utilized Shorts
These shorts are my go-to for everything. They have several pockets, a large double-folded compartment in the back, and rubber dots on the edge of the shorts to prevent them from riding up no matter how hard you're moving.
Best marathon shorts ever
I swear I’ve tried every brand of “spandex shorts” in existence and these are by far the best. I primarily use them for road racing — from 3k to marathon — and nothing has come close to these for comfort and practicality. The pockets are deep, easily fitting 26.2 worth of gels and a phone. The fabric is next level, it feels lightweight but wicks sweat in a way I didn’t know was possible. It has good elasticity but somehow stays in place. (The texture dots on the inside of the cuffs are A+) The shorts’ length and cut and high waistband are perfect for me, and they are the only brand not to leave me with a chafe mark at the marathon distance. Now that the 6” is back, I’m going to stock up. Since I’ve only had one pair, I have saved them for race day and extra long runs but it’s hard to go back to others once you’ve had these. I was unsure on the sizing since I was wearing a S/M/L brand. I’m usually a 6 in Lulu but after trying these on I went with a 4 and that was the right call. If you’re in the D.C. area, stop by the downtown store. Justin and his team are amazing and will get you fitted just right.
Perfect for me!
I use these for running and they are the perfect length. Long enough to stay down but not too long to be hot. The little grips on the bottom also stop them from riding up. I have big legs and a small waist so this is always a problem for me! My only issue is the Arcteryx decal is falling off after the first wash. Doesn’t affect performance of the product, just looks a little cheap. And the material seems to hang onto smells well 😅 Still the best running tights I have found so far for my body type!
Pockets pockets pockets!!
Dare I say perfect? They have pockets for days, I’ll stash my phone, power food, keys, and headphones case in them and still have room to shed a layer and loop it through the front pockets. And I haven’t even ever needed to use the leg pockets. The fabric is top notch, stays in place, and feels like it will last. The length is perfect - just enough to stop chafing without being awkwardly long. The only downside of owning these shorts is that now they’re the only thing I ever want to run in.
Obsessed with the fit!
I have always been a split short girl, but as soon as I tried these on, I was immediately obsessed. The waistband is incredibly comfortable and sits at just the right height. The legs never ride up, it's incredible! These shorts have endured many rainy workouts this season and have stayed in place, providing comfort no matter the weather. If you want a reliable pair of shorts to train in, look no further!
The best!
I bought last year's version (5" length) after trying on a pile of comparable options from other brands. This one came out on top for comfort, fit and features! After wearing them for a year, they still fit great and look brand new - the fabric is durable and hasn't pilled at all. I personally find tight shorts a little swampy on long runs on hot days, but otherwise, zero complaints about these!
