Missing phone storage (?)!
I was very excited to find these shorts, but after buying I found there is no real phone storage. Every decent running short has a good phone storage system these days. Brooks shorts have a tight fitting pocket against the thigh. Salomon shorts have a nice large pocket on the elastic waist band. This short is so close to a great design and I'm so disappointed that this feature was overlooked. Probably going to return these, which is a bummer as I'm back on the search for something else. I really love the direction Smartwool is taking these products, but some of these critical details need to be added.
Shorts received NOT the ones pictured, but comfy!
I was surprised to open my order only to discover that the shorts I received were visually different than the shorts pictured in this listing: There is no block logo on the left side [SMRTWL] and the exterior waistband material is the same as the exterior shorts (vs the liner). That too doesn't feature the 'SMRTWL' labeling. Small things perhaps, but still an unexpected experience. I enjoyed my previous pair of Smartwool active lined shorts for in-home exercise (I wore them out) so I anticipate these being similarly comfortable and effective. I wear a 30/31 in denim and the size S feels great.
The liner caused injury to my manhood
It caused chafing of my p-hole if you know what I mean. The liner isn’t soft enough for long runs. I’m in pain.

The Swiss Army Knife of Shorts
I've been hunting for a 'swiss arm knife' of shorts and believe I have found it. Between the gym, tennis, and hot yoga, these shorts work for it in all areas. I wasn't so sure about the liners, but I have some trail running shorts that have them, and it can take a little getting used to, but hard notice they are there. I was also a little worried the front pockets were going to give me a little 'front butt', but they sit flat and hardly know they are there. As they were on sale, I went back and got a second pair.
Good shorts, but not for running.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The fabric texture is great, and I like the external waist tie. However, the inside of the waistband gets a bit bunched when tied and gets uncomfortable after a long run. My main complaint is the rear phone pocket, which is a feature I search out on running shorts. The pocket is too small (I have an iPhone 13 mini and can barely jam it in there) and placed way too low, which coupled with the relaxed cut of the shorts, means that the phone spanks me the entire run. So not a bad short, but not good for running.
comfy liner and well built
These shorts are super comfy to wear on long hikes. Super breathable and great fitting.
Awesome running shorts!
I use these for running, and occasionally for swimming. But, they are comfortable enough that I could wear them all day. Great fit, awesome merino fabric - as I'd expect from Smartwool - for the liner, and a comfortable extra-wide waistband. The rear pocket works well for keys, but I'd prefer a traditional key pocket inside the waistband (on the right side, as most of my other running shorts have).
This iteration is much roomier than the previous versions
The most comfortable running shorts and the reason is the merino wool liner. It keeps you warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot. This particular iteration is very roomy, particularly the liner. I'm a 6'1', 170-lb male and usually wear medium shorts, but the mediums feel a little bigger than the profile I usually wear. I would go a size smaller so try before you buy
Waistband is now cheap and uncomfortable
Super disappointed. Have purchased these shorts for years and they changed the fit to be really loose and baggy. Also - the waistband used to be a really attractive feature. It was wide, durable and the best I had seen. it really secured the shorts. Now it's thin, cheap and uncomfortable. Very cheap elastic. Shame that they are having these made so cheaply now.
