Not the sock you're looking for.
I've used Darn Tough socks for every backpacking trip for the last 11 years and had never tried this offering from them. These have a very odd stitching pattern on the toe, almost like a cowboy boot shape stitching pattern that is very tight on the big toe and little toe, and tapers longer toward the middle toes. They also have an uncomfortable and bizarre feel to the material. Sliding your foot in felt like putting on a dirty nylon running sock. These stayed on my feet for maybe 15 seconds, and never made it into a pair of shoes. I'm a huge fan of DT's heavier weight socks. I was not a huge fan of these.
These socks are badly misunderstood.
For the last couple of years I've backpacked with Darn Tough cushioned wool socks. They are overall great socks, but they take forever to dry, and will remain damp long after all of my other gear has dried out in the sun. I didn't want to forego wool altogether, because I really like how it minimizes odor and is warmer than other materials when wet. These socks seem to fit the bill perfectly. They are sheer thin, almost like Nylon socks or pantyhose, so hopefully will dry much faster--yet they seem plenty sturdy enough for a few hundred miles of use. I've only done a few miles of dry trail running in them so far, but they have held up just fine and not caused any blisters yet. Some of the other reviewers are correct that the toe seam is in an odd place, but I consider this a feature, as its placement on top of the toes is less likely to cause abrasive discomfort. I might update the review if they don't perform as expected on an upcoming trip, but so far so good.
Darn Tough socks are uncomfortable
The Large size is for 10-12 and I wear an 11.5. These socks do not fit my feet as they should. The heel portion has a sewn in pocket for the heel, but this pocket is actually higher then my heel. That pocket annoys my foot when worn. The stitching above the toes wears on the edge of my pinky toe and/or the edge of my big toe. I purchased 13 pairs for REI and I am going to return all of them. I never had this issue with SmartWool socks.
Worth it; wear like iron. True to size.
True to size and tough. Good fit
