Sizing Notes

Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.

SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.

TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.

Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.

Inseam is measured to the floor.

Not sure why REI continues to ignore user comments. Overall, these shorts are OK, but could be great and here’s why… 1). Unlike many shorts that are 10” length, these are 8” which works great for me with a 29” inseam, but probably a bit short for larger inseams of 34” or more. Many comments have been made about having options for 8”, 10” or 12”. 2). Ever since things have started to be made in China, the zipper length has shrunk from 6.5-7” on my older pants and shorts to 5-5.5”. This makes use a bit of a struggle and might as well not have a zipper. I feel sorry for higher waisted people. 3). Why polyester pockets which begin to smell after a day or so of hiking versus nylon like the rest of the shorts that can be used for days on the trail? 4). Why a cord lock that will gauge in with a pack, even a daypack with belt or fanny pack? 5). Why no weight which is an important aspect for understanding whether these would be good for temps in your area of use? 6). In days long gone now, most hiking shorts and pants had 6 (with two in back spread a bit) or 7 or more belt loops to help pants/shorts fit properly with a belt. 5 loops seem to be the standard on many now which are inadequate to say the least. All these could easily be fixed…

One especially silly design flaw

The shorts have great lightweight feel and aren't the weird stretchy synthetic material that seems to be fairly common these days. BUT I believe there is a fairly obvious design flaw that I wanted to point out in case REI is listening and the item sells in very low quantity/ ends up going to clearance. There is a cinch bungie draw-cord at the front of the waist that any slight use for tightening results in an erect loop that flops around noticeably and hilariously making anyone think of its resemblance of a...(profanity filter for medical term?) . not only this but it can part or lift up any overhang your shirt has making it even more obvious. of course you might be thinking, "well you could probably tuck it away or orient it in a way that eliminates this issue". But I assure you, that option is barely a band-aid solution that steers the customer more so into thinking, "I don't really need these shorts, i'll just find a different brands pair". As I made my way to the clearance rack, this opinion was more so cemented as accurate, as I encountered many many pairs of the Outdoor Afro + REI trail short Item #209589 with the same cinch bungie draw-cord in the same location. I loved the pants variation of the Item (#216255) , as it had a cloth drawstring. I love the color, material, and features of the pant so I bought a pair, but it left me wishing the shorts didn't have that flaw as I would of bought a pair of those too.

Pocket seams self destruct, QC issues

Both pairs fell apart in months. Pants were comfy while they lasted. Both front and rear pockets quite literally fell apart at the seams. Warranty replacement?

Big Design flaw

Great, lite, comfy. Love these. unfortunately the drawstring is a para cord that is not LOOPED around but instead connected via adhesives. that is, the drawstring will come apart. FIX IF YOU WANT TO KEEP IT: follow the cord to the back of the shorts near the mid-back belt loop. You'll have to add reinforced stitching there to keep it from pulling out.

I love my Trailmade womens shorts, so I got these for my husband. We got him a small, his normal size in REI bottoms, and the waist was normal fit, but the leg holes are TIGHT. Fine if he stands still but the moment he started walking it was uncomfortable. He does not have overly large quads or anything. He has a 31-inch waist, 35.5-inch hip. We can't size him up because the waist would be massive. I am a curvy person, and I would be upset if I bought shorts and the legs were tight, so wanted to throw up a review. Maybe we got a dud? Idk, we don't live near an REI so he can't just go into the store and try another small on. It's really frustrating.

fit great but back pockets poorly sewn

I really liked the fit of these in store so I got the only pair in my size and ordered another online. However the back pocket sewing is so weak that putting keys in the back pocket caused each pair to have broken back pockets. I will re stitch it with some heavy duty nylon thread but I’m very disappointed. I tried reaching out to customer service to give product feedback but didn’t get much of a response so hopefully leaving a review will motivate them to use stronger thread or a better back pocket design.

Good for the Cost

These shorts are OK, but therein lies the problem. I wanted to love these shorts. I wanted to have them as my "Go-To" shorts. They just are adequate. I feel that the biggest complaint for me is comfort. The legs feel restrictive. I understand that they will not have the range of motion as running shorts, but for that reason, I will choose running shorts over these for anything that does not require durability. They cost almost half the cost of prAna Zion shorts, But I will not grab these over the prAna shorts when choosing shorts. They do a lot of things right. The water resistance is top-notch. If I wanted durable and water-resistant, then I might use these shorts, but If I want water-resistance, I am most likely to wear my Patagonia running shorts. I just do not see where I would choose them first in my own selection of shorts. That said, my selection has grown over many years of buying shorts from REI. If I were buying hiking shorts for the first time and were on a budget, I would look at these shorts as a possibility. All of the shorts I have compared them to are almost double in price.

Decent but Room for Improvement

I wanted to love these shorts but they're just okay even with the 30% discount for the Anniversary Sale. The material and fit are good but as others have noted, the elastic draw cord is a weird choice. I appreciate the attempt at flexibility since these aren't the kind of shorts you wear with a belt despite having belt loops. However, the elastic in the waistband isn't strong enough and the draw cord doesn't help much either. Squatting or bending over always leads to the shorts sagging down. I ended up removing the elastic cord and replacing it with the tie string from some old athletic shorts and this works much better. A better solution would be to redesign these with a stronger elastic waistband and interior tie string more like running shorts or a built in belt like the Prana Zion shorts or the REI Sahara shorts from 2018/2019.

Great for everything.

I really like these shorts. I like the simple design and ability to use a belt. The side zipper, the carabiner loop, and the drawstring is all good. I like everything about them. Plenty of room for my butt, and for squating. I want more active shorts with belt loops that can be worn with ot without a belt. I lift run and hike in these. I have had them for almost a year now. I moved the draw string ends to the front and I keep my arcade belt on them.
