I've been trying to find a low cut summer hiker for a few years. Used the Keen Targhee IV last summer and was pretty satisfied but it was kind of heavy feeling and seemed a bit clunky. I actually picked up a pair of Oboz and took them home but they started to feel uncomfortable in the toe box. They also felt a little too flexible for me. I took them back and was going to just grab another pair of Keens but saw these Ons on the wall and was intrigued. They are light and seemed pretty stiff which is what I like. I hike in snow most of the year and wear Zamberlan Vios that I love due to their stuff out sole...just too hot to wear during the summer. I just got back from a shake down hike with these shoes and am very pleased. Excellent cushion and the sole is stiff enough to not feel every rock or edge of boulders. Really impressed. Feels light like a running shoe but stiff enough to protect my feet. The soles are really grippy too and gave me confidence in climbing down over steep rocks. Looking forward to a great summer with these shoes...pleasantly surprised!
I was looking for a hiking shoe that combined lightness with exceptional lateral stability, since both my knees are replacements. Picked one of these off the rack and was surprised how light they felt; so I tried on a pair. Walked around for quite a while and Voila! decided this was the shoe for me. Did far more hiking than normal at Red River Gorge in these, and they performed exactly as I hoped they would; allowing me to go past my assumed mileage limit. Hey-for what it's worth: Beside me at the REI in Jacksonville was a guy headed off to climb Mt Everest, and he was looking for shoes for the hike-in. He chose these shoes too!
These shoes are as close to a perfect fit as any low hiker I’ve ever purchased (as good as my go-to Lowa Renegade IMHO), very solid on my feet, excellent tread. Where I have issue with them is their propensity for the exterior of the shoe to absorb water, even right out of the box. I understand that the “waterproofing” is an interior membrane but any waterproof shoe, raincoat, etc sheds water for a time, these don’t. I’ve tried applying several Nikwax products to get them to repel water but none have worked.
I was nervous about purchasing On Cloud hiking shoes, but boy was I wrong. They are fantastic. Comfortable and fully supportive when walking and or hiking on uneven or rough terrain. I am so pleased that I took a chance on these shoes. I have 3 good hikes under my belt including the Alps, so I put them through the ringer.
........the fit just wasn't right. I like to be able to tighten my shoes. With the way the lowest eyelets are set apart, just doesn't allow that without the toe box fabric getting bunched up.
Just bought these shoes, very happy with the comfort and the stability but just out of the box they absorb water. I understand that a waterproof shoe keeps your feet dry with an interior membrane but I’ve never owned a “waterproof” shoe that didn’t at least initially repel water from the outside. My first hike in them I came back with very heavy shoes as they acted like a sponge. I’ll apply Nikwax waterproofing to them but Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware).
Great shoe but not breathable. Would use mostly for wet trails or light snow
I needed a cooler, lighter pair of hiking shoes for a trip to Zion and Bryce, so I visited my local REI store in Appleton,WI. Trying on a few pair of shoes, I finally tried the Clouds… They were the perfect hikers for me, lightweight and comfortable. The salesperson helped me size the shoes and pair the socks. Hiking the trails at Zion and Bryce were very challenging, but the Clouds held up well. They were grippy and supportive the whole 6 days! I love them!
