Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

Home comfort outdoors

Disclosure: I received NEMO Jazz 30 Double Sleeping Bag in exchange for an honest review. NEMO Jazz 30 Double Sleeping Bag came in a large duffel bag. With its synthetic recycled Stratofiber fill, the sleeping bag has comfort level of 32F/0C. This bag is obviously for cold weather, although comfort temperature levels provided by manufacturers mean different things for different people. At the time of my review it was full spring weather with night/day temperatures in the mid 40F/60F degrees, and I found the sleeping bag a bit warm. However, the two side zippers allow the top of the bag to be opened all the way down for sleeping under the included top sheet. I would prefer if the top part would be detachable so you could take it off and fold it out of the way, or at least have some loops so you can keep it rolled up neatly at the bottom. This sleeping bag is large enough for two people. For one it is a very comfortable space to roll around. It was an especially nice change after sleeping in my mummy backpacking bag. The outer shell is 50D polyester in deep green color with yellow fabric inside. Two burly YKK zippers with draft tubes on both sides provide easy temperature adjustment independently for each person. I would still plan to sleep in base layers or bag liner to keep the sleeping bag clean. Washing a sleeping bag of this size can be difficult. Blanket fold works like a draft collar, however it doesn't have any way to tighten it around your neck especially when used by two people. I was not that excited about the pillow pocket; if I put my head on the pillow inside the pocket then the blanket gets on my face and it doesn’t work like a hood. If I put my head on top of the pocket then my face is on a polyester shell. I ended up simply placing my pillow on the top of the pillow pocket. NEMO Jazz 30 Double Sleeping Bag has an integrated pad sleeve that allows the use of two single sleeping pads or one double pad like the Nemo Roamer Double. I really liked the latter combination. It creates a fantastic bed for outdoor living. It is easier to install the Roamer Double into Jazz 30 when it is not fully inflated. The sleeping bag sleeve has access to the pad valve for later inflation. It is also possible to deflate a Roamer Double Pad inside the sleeping bag sleeve and roll it together for storage, but I found it more manageable to pack the pad and sleeping bag separately. The Jazz 30 Sleeping bag weighs 8 lb 15 oz.

Cozy and warm without cooking you in the morning.

The overall quality seems top notch, the fabric and stitching are without imperfection. The inner sheet is nice and soft and the insulation plush enough to keep me plenty warm on the 2 40ish degree nights I’ve had it out so far. In the morning it’s easy to peel back the bag and just use the sheet so you don’t get sweated out before you want to wake up. Love that my girlfriend can unzip the foot portion on her side to stick a leg out without compromising my half staying nice and bundled up. Zippers never seem to catch and are well designed. The hood has plenty of room for two full size pillows and the small pockets near the head are perfect for keeping a phone overnight. I had this paired with Nemo’s roamer sleeping pad and it fit in perfectly to the pad sleeve in the bottom. Just make sure you put the pad in place partially inflated then finish pumping it up. Absolutely love that the whole thing can roll up together with the pad for easy storage and fast setup, the duffel bag it comes with is absolutely massive and makes it easy to get put away.

Perfect for car camping with my dogs!

I needed a double size sleeping bag so my two dogs would be more comfortable on car camping trips and this sleeping bag is perfect! I love the integrated sheet inside and the pocket for the NEMO Roamer sleeping pad makes for a wonderful night sleep and no problems with shifting the bag off the pad or losing my pillows. I did end up adding my Rumpl Puffy Blanket inside the bag for some extra warmth but I tend to sleep colder than most. It’s a huge bag though and it does take up quite a bit of room in my car when packing.

Comfortable for two

The only downside of buying a double Roamer pad was that our previous double sleeping solution didn’t fit it. This turned out to be a great solution. My spouse and I have very different temperature preferences, and the design of this made it really easy for both of us to be really comfortable. The sheet seemed really silly and like it wouldn’t be a nice feeling on the skin, but was strangely great.

Even better than expected

My wife and I used this bag during a Spring camping trip and the nights ranged from a low of 33F to a low of 55F. My wife usually has a hard time keeping warm, but we both slept toasty warm on the first night that reached a low of 33F. Because we were so comfortable on that first cold night I was worried that we would be too hot on the following nights that I knew were going to be much warmer. My concern was not justified and we both slept very comfortably even when. The lows were in the mid 50s. I feel the integrated sheet made the difference in temperature control. I would not recommend using this bag without a nice pad since the base is very thin. We used this bag in conjunction with the Exped DeepSleep Mat 7.5 Duo Sleeping Pad, which has an excellent R rating. My one complaint was that the bag does not have a compression sack. I ended up buying a 40L sack to make the bag more manageable to pack during campouts.

Great bag, why no stuck sack?

Great double bag. With Warmth, coziness, and individual temperature control, this is the best double sleeping bad on the market. My only issue is the stuff sack, or lack there of. For $350 this should include a proper stuff sack. The only thing included is more like a storage sack.

Our new favorite

This double sleeping bag replaces two individual ones we used when tent camping, and we absolutely love it! It’s warm, has plenty of room for us both, and I appreciate that it’s an attractive color. I like the option of using the interior sheet, but wish it was held in place with more than just the snaps that tend to come undone throughout the night. It’s a minor detail, and not a big deal for us. Overall, we are very happy with it!

Very happy finally purchased this

I'm astonished how cozy this was for me and my 9 year old. We most recently used it at the very edge of its rating--30 degrees F--and it performed great. The top of the "blanket" combined with the the hood meant that we both could customize our head and face coverage without disturbing the other. The bag never got bunchy at the feet; it stayed put. Accommodated regular pillows easily. No weird snags or hard spots from closures--very well designed. Very pleased with this purchase.

Duuuuude!

I’ve only used it a couple times, and it is by far the best sleeping bag I have ever had. Perfect for a couple who likes to snuggle their toddler, or feel like that they are at home.

Warm and cozy for two

Paired with the Roamer pad was more comfortable than my bed. Was toasty but not overheated with two people down to high 40s. The head pouch thing was easily ignored (just put my pillow over it) but not sure how much I would use it even in colder weather. Individual foot zips are a nice touch. Highly recommend when combined with the Roamer. Obviously a car camping bag.
