Do these shoes have springs?
I seriously hesitated ponying-up the big bucks for these Mafate X. Now that I’ve worn them a few times, I wish I would’ve pulled the trigger sooner to make them mine. For context, I wear Bondi 9 and Skyward X on roads, and used to wear Stinson 7 on trails. My Stinson’s will be worn for shorter neighborhood walks on MUP, now. These Mafate X might be the perfect trail shoe—at least for me. The width throughout the shoe is more generous than both Bondi and Skyward X, but still hugs the heel as it should. The upper fabric breathes and is durable enough to resist scuffing; encountering plenty of wet grass still left my feet and socks dry. Before actually wearing the shoes I thought: the laces going so close to the toe-end of the shoes looked odd, the tongue looked short, and wondered if the shoes would feel too heavy on my feet. The laces offer phenomenal adjustability and stay tied. The tongue is precisely the proper length and kept its place throughout. The shoes felt plush, springy, and supportive through the entire foot and my feet, legs, and even hips, were happier than they’ve been in recent memory. Seriously, you probably wanna give these shoes a try. And if they don’t become your new BFFs the way they have mine, there’s always the more-than-generous exchange/return policy. But I’m betting you’re gonna be out there eating up the trail miles in these Mafate X beauties like I am.
These shoes are amazing!
AMAZING and SO CUTE! I purchased these for a technical 21K trail race. They felt extremely comfortable right out of the box. Great stability and super grippy. I had to exchange them for 1/2 size smaller than my Speedgoats, Machs, Mach Xs and the Cielo X1. I am guessing these are a bit wider because they are designed for longer distances.
The best Hoka!
I usually wait a week or so before reviewing shoes. I just received these Hokas an hour ago and have been wearing around the house. Let me tell you- they are super comfy right out the box! I LOVE them. I can tell they will be perfect for the trails. The cushioning is heavenly, the traction is superb, the breathable uppers make them even lighter. I think they run a little big so I'm glad I ordered a half size smaller. Prior to this shoe the Stinson 5 mid GTX was my favorite. The Mafate X is my new favorite!
Cadillac of Trail Shoes
Perfect trail shoe for me. If you’re a fan of skyward x, you’ll love these! Surprisingly stable, but tons of cushion. TTS!
Not enough for harsh terrain
Just finished the Arizona Trail- 800 miles of rocky rugged terrain. The shoes were VERY comfortable. Unfortunately the terrain was too much for the soles. Despite having Vibram soles, I needed 3 pairs for the distance. Broken shards of rocks everywhere tore up the soles and ground down the lugs in about 250 miles. They would be great for easier terrain but not up to their challenge.
Very happy!
I was unsure if I needed these but I’m so glad I got them. I wound up going hiking right after I got them, and they were so comfortable right out of the box. Great grip. I love them.
