Very Slow Flow
First time using the Autoflow Filer for a group back country trip (4 people). Previous experience with the Platypus with no issues. The flow was very slow as a band new filter. We found unscrewing the cap on the Nalgene helped a bit but by the end of the 3 day trip it was trickling. If you dont have the extra dromedary bag that you need to purchase separately you cannot back filter as instructed for maintenance so this was not an option on the trip. Tried back filtering with my nalgene attached and no luck. Not sure what this is not sold as a whole package with the 2nd clean bag (like the platypus brand) if it is needed for cleaning and maintaining the filter. Disappointed.
Great Filter, 10/10
I am not sure why this got such a bad review. I have 2 of these filters and have used them ( and replaced the filters a couples times of course) over about 5-6 years. for about 20-30L a day in showering, drinking and cooking water for a camp team of 2-8 (more usually around with a couple dogs) and they shine. I have 4 dromedary bags, 2 of them black sea to summits with the shower thingy, 2 black msr's and i just keep switching out the bags 2x a day, takes 90 sec to fill and switch it, and then maybe 20 min to filter most of it, im guessing on time but it doesnt take long. We leave the bags in the sun to shower with warmer water when the suns down, and have endless water for drinking and cooking and cleaning chores in camp. We filter lake michigan directly with this for years, no issues, no sickness, no funny tastes. have also filtered most of michigans good camping rivers with no issues, several other inland lakes. canada as well. no issues. i recommend this filter to anyone who doesnt need the viral filtering of the guardian gravity (which i have an is a great filter if your water is questionable)
Finicky filter
I have used this filter on a couple of 6-day long backpacking trip and observed how they hold up for several trips over the course of two summers. To get this to work correctly, it takes a lot of effort. You need to figure out how to purge air out of the line, avoid air pressure backup, and to backflush. If you get it working well, it will fill a liter bottle in less than 2 minutes. Brand new with tap water it is about 1 liter per minute. When it is not optimized it can take 5 or 6 minutes per liter or longer. Getting the 10 L dromedary bag to go along with this allows you to do other things while filtering, otherwise you are constantly swapping out smaller containers. After several trips, the water bags started to show some serious wear and tear. Also, it does not filter out viruses, which is ok in most places in the US, but could be a serious problem in some places. Nevertheless, this is not a bad option for hiking with big groups (e;g.,12 persons). There may be better options for groups, but probably for a higher price.
Great if you follow the directions!
I've been using this filter system for 4 years now, and it's awesome. Durable, easy to use, and fast. The one caveat is it's easiest to use a Nalgene to back flush it fairly often (per directions) to keep operation optimal. I always take a Nalgene when I backpack, so it's not a problem for me, but if you don't you might need to find some sort of workaround.
