Have had this for almost a year. Was searching for something more water resistant than my gamma MX that I adore. Excellent rain protection for city use. Haven’t taken it snowboarding yet but suspect I may get too warm in it in the PNW. While sitting outside for 3+ hours watching my kid’s wet baseball games in the early spring, I did get colder than I expected and had to add a mid layer on top of my baselayer. Again, not worried about it keeping me warm in more active situations. Usually wear a medium and accidentally bought a small and it fits very well. I have an athletic but short build(close to stocky) and don’t have any trouble with the arm pits as others mentioned. Love the pockets.
You will get loads of features, but they still don't justify the price tag. Lining feels nice in the pockets, though something similar could have been used in the collar against the chin. For the price I was expecting the jacket to be warmer. I was cold walking in 20F / -7C with a t-shirt and a thin woolen jumper. Seems it is not really a winter jacket for Finland. Luckily I got a large, being 181cm/75kg, there is plenty of room to layer underneath. M will suffice if you don't need room for thick layers or plan to do something more active. I expect to find more use of the fairly low insulation and shell in ice climbing / alpine skiing in the late winter/ early spring when the sun melts snow/ice and things get warmer and damper with still snow around.
I purchased this coat whilst on a trip down to Minneapolis. I’m a 6’2” 285lb middle aged Canadian. It was not purchased to climb any mountains, run, hike etc. I just bought the coat because I have some LEAF stuff and it is excellent. I have bought Arc’teryx’s stuff for about 15 years with zero regrets. Back in the hotel room my wife asked to see the coat I tried hiding from her. I couldn’t get the zipper started and she couldn’t either. “Don’t you already have this jacket?” She seemed giddy, like somehow my legendary brand has let me down. They didn’t have another xxf in stock which was a shame as it was on sale with no tax. This jacket looked like my black Beta AR which continues to be flawless. Please upgrade the zipper to match the rest of the garment.
As a loyal Arc’teryx customer it pains me to give the Beta Insulated a bad review, but it seems Arc’teryx dropped the ball here. The jacket looks and feels cheap. As has been mentioned the fabric is extremely crinkly and noisy and looks like cheap Nylon. The underarm zippers are hard and unbending and placed way too close to the underarms. The result is a jacket that dig into your underarms effectively limiting movement. Last but not least the two way zipper feels cheap and the bottom part seems very fragile. Logically I returned the Beta insulated and for the first time in 15 years I need to look elsewhere for a new winter jacket. I really hope that Arc’teryx reed these reviews and come up with a revised version that addresses the errors and poor design choices.
(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) I bought this jacket for winter cycling in Montreal as well as ice climbing where there is little to no approach. I like that it's an all-in-one. Layers sometimes get in the way and tend to be bulkier than a single product. I can attest to the performance of Gore-Tex in this jacket. When I'm winter cycling in -20 C, I'm comfortable and don't have to worry about my head, neck and core (can't say the same for my feet!)
I recently bought this to replace a utility walking jacked I had for years. This is in my opinion the perfect 3 season all weather jacket for hiking, walking and other outdoor activities. Lots of pockets, great ventilation, light weight and breathable. Don't have to have many layers just get a bace layer on and go. I love the weight and the water proof characteristics for what I do.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Waterproof with lightweight insulation. I was looking for a waterproof alternative to my Atom Hoody (Atom LT) and Atom Heavyweight (Atom AR). The Beta Insulated falls in-between the two Atoms when it comes to warmth. I bought the XL version and it's a little on the small size compared to my Beta LT jacket. The underarm area is also a little bit tight. But all in all a good jacket.
The jacket overall seems good, but the fit is just simply awful, no other way to describe it. It is very snug and has far too little room in the armpits, it always feels like its squeezing me there, even when I size up. There is literally no room in this to add another layer if you order one true to size. I love the jacket otherwise but I find it unwearable. Please fix the fit!
My husband already owns this jacket so I knew I would like it, but now owning my own I really do love it. I work outdoors and I bought this jacket to replace a different brand's jacket that didn't keep me dry in the rain. The Beta works perfectly. Partnered with Beta rain pants and Arc'teryx Goretex shoes I can face the rain undaunted.
Great product and really like the color. It fits long in the body which is perfect for winter sports. My only complaint is the zipper is super difficult to get started. It’s the double zip so it can vent if you unzip from the bottom. This feature makes the zipper sticky and takes a few tries before I’m able to zip the coat.
