Great cooler
The Dometic CFX 75 cooler is a great product. It keeps items cold and it good for taking on a road trip or to use at a party/gathering without the need for ice. The cooler has two compartments, one to hold cans and the other for food items. Although you can put either in both compartments. Each compartment has its own temp setting that can be brought down to -8 degrees. Which is good to keep some items frozen and others cold. It does take some time to get cold so a suggestion would be to start the cooling process a few hours before its use. The cooler does need to be plugged in to keep cold, so it’s not like a regular cooler. It works best to have a power source nearby to use, be it a vehicle or an outlet. It is not too practical to use for a camping trip unless you have a campsite with power or a generator. It is great for a gathering/ party so that you do not need to use ice. Another helpful hint is to use an ice pack, since the cooler will keep it frozen, just in case the power is out and the products inside stay cold. The 75 cooler is quite big, it takes up most of the trunk space, I drive a rav 4. So keep that in mind when packing for a trip. The smaller models may be better when packing for a camping trip. But if you are not carrying many items, the size is good. The cooler feels very firm and sturdy. It is heavy, so two people will need to lift it when full. It comes with two power adapters, AC and DC. I would definitely recommend this cooler for its capacity, ease of use and it is very quiet
Fridge and/or Freezer
This cooler is great for long-term travel needs or a small extra fridge/freezer. I found it useful for a house party and not needing to have ice to keep things cold. The ability to set two different temperature controls in the two separate compartments is nice for ice cream and cold but not frozen drinks all in one. It is on the heavier side and bulky to move around. It would be nice if it had some wheels for easier transportation. Overall, the cooler feels sturdy and insulates well.
Dometic CFX5 75
The Dometic CFX5 75 is a premium-powered cooler that stands out for its durability and functionality. Pros: - The build quality is exceptional, feeling sturdy and designed to last for years. - While it’s on the heavier side, I found it manageable to lift when empty. - It operates remarkably quietly, and it's difficult to tell when it's running. - Dometic offers a smart app that's easy to set up and works seamlessly. While it allows you to control the temperature remotely, I'm not sure how frequently I’d use it in practice. Considerations: - The latches on the lids feel somewhat flimsy and could be sturdier. - Although the cooler’s weight speaks to its robust construction, it may be cumbersome to move, so keep that in mind when considering your purchase. Ideal Uses: - This cooler is perfect for longer car camping trips or excursions with access to electricity, where durability and consistent performance are key.
Very high quality and easy to use.
This is a very high quality cooler. The battery monitoring is such a great feature. You can use the cooler plugged in to your car’s cigarette lighter and it will adjust the run cycles based on your battery life. The dual zones make it perfect for longer camping trips or van life. The cooler is large and quite difficult to move with just one person. I have it installed on a slider in the back of my truck so I don’t need to pull it out of the truck at the campsite. I’d highly recommend Dometic products to anyone.
Great powered cooler! Spacious and efficient
I got a chance to use this cooler during the holiday season - so it was pretty cold outside. I ended up using it as supplemental cooling since my primary refrigerator was full. This is not a small cooler - its quite large, and has two separate compartments that can be controlled independently. I love the fact that the cooler has an interior drain plug. I have seen other coolers in this design get full of water and not easily be able to drain without tipping them out. I tested this cooler in both freezer and cooler mode. I also had a chance to use it with a 1500wH battery pack - and it lasted for multiple days once already cold. It really used a tiny bit of electricity to maintain its cold. The cooler did struggle to freeze liquid chicken broth solid from room temperature. Only one of my two containers actually froze. I think the lesson here is that if you want to use it to keep things frozen, it works well, but if you want to freeze things from warm, it struggles a bit. The electronics and app work well - though I'm not 100% why I would use an app to control the cooler. The screen does a nice job and is intuitive to use.
Adding to my previous 1 star review…
The majority of the 4 or 5 star reviews are from people who received this for free! This is a very poorly made product. Every 10 seconds when it’s not running, you get a loud twirp twirp twrip sound. When it does run, it’s a loud clunk, then it’s running loudly and it finishes with a loud clunk. Then back to twirp twirp twirp. The lids do not close properly. They are misaligned. The finish is so poorly done that without even trying, it’s damaged. This vs. the CFX3 55IM I’ve had for years, and there’s zero damage to the finish. Hmm. If you’re considering this fridge, look elsewhere. I can’t wait to get this thing back to REI to get my money back!
All the comforts of home, on the go!
I’ve had my CFX5 75dz for roughly 3 months now paired and powered by the PLB40 on the go. I’m an avid fisherman/outdoorsman living in Texas and if you know anything about Texas right now, it’s HOT. This cooler has come in clutch on so many adventures carrying enough food and drinks to sustain a small army. The best thing about having the dual zone is I can bring ice cream and popsicles for the kids (and myself LOL) which really hits the spot after a full day on the water. It’s robust, sleek but rugged and fits perfectly in my rig on the fridge slide. I can get about 3.5 days out of the PLB40 with no power input and could easily extend that almost indefinitely with the solar input. I do plan to add the cover when they are back in stock as an extra layer of protection and insulation. Being able to monitor and control the cooler from the Dometic app is also a major plus. One nice to have would be the ability to add the PLB40 to the app as well so that you could monitor your solar input / output, and just overall unit health in the field.
Essential equipment to your camping rig
Tested for a 2 week camping trip around western united states in summer. Temperatures averaged 90+ degrees, and this refrigerator/freezer performed as expected. Cfx 75 Truly is a plug and play piece of equipment. My wife and myself never noticed and sounds from our 2 week trip; in complete silence you can hear some faint noise from the compressor, but its negligible. My only concern while on the road trip was meeting the powering needs of the unit; it required a little extra thought and planning. Otherwise, swell product for the price and this product will be on my future line-up for years to come
had for a few days getting error
513-Compressor didn't start is the error, on AC or DC power.
Excellent for car/truck camping
I have been car camping for decades and have used everything from cheap styrofoam coolers to 65+ quart RTIC (and similar style) ice chests. This is, by far, the best. And yes, I purchased this cooler (75dz) at full price. Cooling: I had no trouble on either the fridge or freezer side (both sides used for freezer and fridge). But that's not specific enough so here's some testing - on an 1100 mile trip across a huge chunk of Texas (and NM and CO), where the cooler was in the bed of my truck, under a camper shell (vented), and ambient temperature was ~94 degrees for at least 600 miles (no direct sunlight), it not only kept a *full* freezer side frozen but *froze* items that were not completely frozen when they were loaded. The fridge side preserved all goods as well (bacon, condiments, meat, cheese, etc.). The freezer side was set to -8 and the highest it got was 2 degrees. Fridge side was set to 37 degrees which did not change the entire trip. I will say, however, on the fridge side, the top items were, based on touch alone, a little warmer than 37 degrees but still within safe cooling. Also, this is on 12V the entire time. This is based on a completely full fridge and freezer. In camp I had low humidity and cool temperatures and was running A/C power most of the time - there were no issues at all and it kept whatever temperature I set. The same applies to indoor operation. Power: I ran it on an EcoFlow River Pro for a few hours just to test and it was no different than running on the truck battery. As far as 12V from the vehicle is concerned, there were no issues (~1 hour with the engine off and it started fine). It would be nice to have a "low profile" 12V accessory plug (if those even exist). In the provided pic, the receptacle is on the right side. The plug sticks out far enough where damage can occur if the cooler slides into it. In the pic, I just used hiking boots to prevent this. Noise: While camping, I kept the cooler in the vestibule of an REI Basecamp-6, which was right behind our heads while we were sleeping. I could *just* hear the compressor kick on over the noise of the tent fan. If you need/like some kind of white noise while sleeping, you're going to have no problems with this cooler nearby. If you need it to be stone quiet then, yeah, you're going to hear compressor noise but really, it is *seriously* quiet for a refrigerator. Latches: I've seen other reviews about the latches so the first thing I tried after unpacking was testing how well they perform. They latched with little pressure. The lids could be dropped from half-open (at least) and they would latch. I reversed my lids (which is a great feature) and still had no problems with the lids latching. Capacity: The 75dz holds a nice amount of groceries especially if you try to save space. Frozen OJ is great. Ground beef or sausage stored in 8" vacuum seal bags and flattened will fit perfectly in the bottom basket on the small side - 8 to 10 one pound bags. 1/2 gallon milks can go on the large side on one half. An 18-count container of eggs will sit flat on half of the large side (at the top). Basically, they designed this cooler so well that you don't have to waste time puzzling all your goods into place. The solutions for packing many items are fairly simple with a tiny bit of creativity. With respect to camping - this cooler should hold enough items for a family of three for 5 to 7 days before you have to go to the store (ymmv of course). This is based on cooking breakfast and dinner and having some dry/canned goods (bread, sides, tortillas, etc.). Overall: This is a great cooler and very rugged. With respect to camping, you can't beat it. Being able to carry a large load of groceries across multiple states for camping/overlanding and not having to restock ice and/or dig through ice is worth it.
