works great, clip stinks
The radio itself is awesome! Worked fabulous in the white mountain National Forrest, on the kangamungus and other area that have absolutely NO cell service in NH. Only complaint is the old school clip it comes with. It’s not awful, but could be improved. I’m gonna to buy a carabiner to attach to the bottom, kinda like rocky talkies. I choose these vs, the rocky talkies because they are $60 cheaper when marked at full price, and I have a 20% off coupon making the differential that much more. These work the same at a much cheaper price point. Battery worked great for a 3 day backpacking trip. We turned it off at night and had plenty of battery left. There is even an emergency weather channel you can access. I still have to explore the app, but that gives you a lot more options as well that other walkie talkies don’t offer
Motorola upgrade to Lithium!
I have been using the 8xx series radio at work for years. In the world of 2-way radios these seem to be the best. Granted this is a world of mediocrity. They finally upgraded to USB-C years after everyone else did, but still cling to NiMH batteries! The battery life has always been a little iffy on making it through 1 work day...If I use Alkaline batteries they will last a few days. After Motorola finally upgrades to C why did they not upgrade the poor battery that has plagued these for years? Voice quality has been better then most, I like the ability to attach a secure lanyard for work at heights, I pull the volume knob off so I don't unintentionally adjust the volume, The lock feature works pretty good, except for volume. If they would just upgrade these to Lithium batteries to get a more useful life out of a charge that would be a game changer! RockyTalkie may be the best option for little 2 way, I may try them next.
No actual Go Locate!
I'm only as far in to using these as discovering that the Talkabout app that is intended to download maps so you can locate your devices is TERRIBLE. You cannot, in fact, download maps (or even load them when you're on wifi). The Geolocation of the units is the hook that sells these things and it doesn't work. It's too bad, aside from that they seem nice.
