I got the black out lens and it was crystal clear on a sunny day but the goggles let in too much air. The foam around the googles is a weird design, not even. I never had this problem before and this was with mild winds -17mph. I would not trust these in a heavy storm, blizzard, or high winds. I returned them.
Picked up a pair of these on clearance and even at a deeply discounted price I'm disappointed. Starting with the pros: they fit my face, play nicely with a helmet well and provide a decent field of view. The lens optics however are pretty awful- there's noticeable distortion when looking through the lenses, as well as glare. Both supplied lenses provide very mediocre contrast enhancement compared to lenses from Oakley, Glade and others. Overall this is a particularly disappointing offerin from Smith. With a pretty lofty MSRP, the value for money just isn't there. There are many far better options from a number of other brands out there.
I have a semi-wide face, so I got the XL. The curve on these goggles is way too tight. They put pressure on the sides/temple area and leaves small gaps in the center around the nose and middle forehead. They are in no way meant for wider faces. The Oakley flight decks, Anon M4, and Giro all fit way better and are far more comfortable. There is also some distortion in the lowest section of the lens. Not sure why other websites recommend these so much, especially for wider faces. I did also try them on with a smith helmet and still had them feel uncomfortable.
The anti fog coating is horrible on this, they fog up and when they are foggy, the inner layer is super fragile. I wore them on the first day, brand new and they fogged up like crazy, i switched the lens and the same thing happened to the second lens. i had to go on riding without goggles. Whats worse, is that when i put the goggles away into their case, the plastic piece of the strap went under the goggle and scratched the wet coating, so now it has permanent damage after just one use. This is unacceptable for a goggle so expensive.
I really like the goggles and lenses. There is a slight blur near the bottom lens fold at first, but after a couple of runs it stops being noticeable. One thing that did surprise me: if you’re wearing them with a Smith helmet (in my case) and you lift the goggles onto the front edge of the helmet after a run, the lens comes off the magnets and the two clips and fall out. Just something to be careful about and hopefully to be addressed by Smith. Other then that - perfect and love the field of view.
The goggles in perfect conditions are great. I bought them in summer and took them out today. They were amazing, clear, great contrast and field of view. I was very excited. Then it started snowing and my experience changed. I was expecting greatness, considering the research and all online reviews saying this is the "best of the best". But reality was disappointing. The Anti fog coating - is not working, it fogged up instantly. I had to take the face mask off and even then it kept fogging. I changed lenses - but the same happened to the low light lens. even more. the lens froze. so I took them off and put them away. had to ride the slope without goggles. I got home only to find out that the inner coating was damaged. I don't get how goggles so expensive could be damaged so easily? how is this not mentioned in any reviews?
The worst quality lenses for the price. The inside of the lens is not even cleanable with a lens cloth. It will scratch immediately if touched by anything, feels like they scratch just by looking at them. Warranty doesn’t cover the trash quality of their lenses. Total rip off, go and find something else if you are looking for better quality.
I was very excited for these goggles, however I own a pair of Squad MAG XL (LOVE them so much but it was time to upgrade) and these goggles don’t fit quite right there’s a big gap at the nose in the cheeks feel exposed underneath, and I am not a low bridge nose person. Unfortunately I got them on the final sale and they won’t exchange them so careful when you purchase them. Try them on in the store first is my recommendation!
I love the color, the vibe and the starting visbility is terrific. However, I've cinched these down as far as I can with even moderate comfortability and they're still super breezy. So much so that my eyes water when I'm wearing them. And the padding around the nose peice is super thin. Also, and lastly, they regularly fog on the lower sheild. An expensive peice of equipment that don't work very well.
bought these goggles too hopefully help me with flat light. didn't get to use them for that, but I did use them on a cloudy / sunny day and a sunny day. I got the blackout lenses and it was crystal clear for both days. on the cloudy / sunny day there were mild winds, 17 mph with some higher gusts. there was a lot of air coming into the goggles. I've been in many storms / blizzards and never felt anything like this before with my last pair of electric eg3s. I think these goggles would be horrible in a strong wind / blizzard. they look great and the dark lens was crystal clear on a sunny day but I returned them. I don't want to take the chance of keeping them and having more air come in on a windy day. the foam design around the goggle is a weird shape. it's not uniform. around the nose area it wasn't even symmetrical. there was a big gap on one side of my nose compared to the other.
