Built for real rain

Our kid loves this set and reaches for it without hesitation on rainy mornings. At their forest school, rain is just part of the day—puddles to stomp in, mud to kneel in, wet branches to climb over—and this gear handles it all without any drama. The boot straps are especially great. They keep the pants securely in place so nothing rides up, even after hours of running and crouching and exploring. It’s a small detail, but it makes a real difference by the end of a long day outside. After multiple rainy days in a row, everything still performs the way it should. It dries easily, holds up to hard use, and comes home dirty but never soaked through. It feels simple and well made, which is exactly what we were hoping for. The only downside is that our kid doesn’t want to take it off at the end of the day.

rain set

THE SETUP We put these 2.0 PU sets to the ultimate test during our February mission to Palo Duro Canyon. While we prepare for the high-desert temperature swings, we also have to account for the unexpected. These sets were deployed as our primary barrier against both moisture and the abrasive canyon wind. THE FIELD NOTES • Waterproof Integrity: 100 percent dry. We encountered a canyon shower while out hiking, and the Helox technology performed exactly as advertised. The welded seams are the real deal—no leaking at the high-tension points. • Mobility: Often, PU rain gear can feel like a stiff suit of armor. This set has surprising stretch. Our kids were able to climb and scramble over the Palo Duro terrain without feeling restricted. • Durability: The canyon floor is unforgiving. Between the red dirt and the mesquite brush, we expected some scuffing. These held up exceptionally well. The fabric is much tougher than the lightweight "emergency" rain shells often found in the youth category. THE VET’S TAKE • Layering Strategy: This is an unlined shell, which makes it a year-round asset. We layered it over fleece during the 30°F nights at camp to act as a windbreak, then used it as a standalone rain barrier during the day. • The Bootstraps: The elastic bootstraps are a critical feature. They kept the bibs locked down over their hiking boots, preventing the red Palo Duro dust and water from creeping up the leg. THE KIDD FACTOR • Comfort: 5/5 🧃. No complaints about "scratchy" fabric or restricted movement. They actually asked to keep them on even after the sun came out. • Independence: The bib-style design is easy for 4 and 5-year-olds to manage with minimal assistance, and the detachable hood is a great safety feature for brushy trails. FINAL AUDIT VERDICT: PASS. (A professional-grade barrier for the smallest members of the unit). — Field Audit by the_grand_american_travel
