Wanted a rolling duffel that had all the size and space without being too busty. It is almost perfect but with a few flaws. The wear and tear when being slid across an airplane bin to be stack gives the bag a "banged" up look often. It's easily wipeable but still not visually pleasing. The very top zipper isn't able to be locked but also isn't deep enough to really put anything in there outside of things you need for easy access. With the bottom of the bag not being of hard plastic, if items stick inside of it, makes the bag feel lumpy.
Very DISAPPOINTING. Spent good money on a luggage that I believed would last me a life time. Bought 2weeks ago, received it on time for trip only for it to have a crack and ripped at the top corner. I travel 80% of the time for work and I have used no name brand luggage that have lasted years. This one fell apart after the first use/flight. I reached out to The North Face customer service about an exchange only to be given the run around.
I own three of these. They are well made but heavy and the bags weight is about 22 percent of the allowed baggage allowance of 50lbs per checked bag that most airlines follow. A buckle on one of my bags broke on its first airline trip. North Face customer service said North Face do not stock buckles and I would have to ship it to a repair centre. At the repair centre I was told they don't have the buckles and they can't get them from North Face. The repair centre would source new buckles and change the straps...what a waste of time and effort when the broken buckle can be slid off the strap to be replaced. Unfortunately, North Face doesn't stock it and the customer suffers. Terrible service and poor support for a new product. So much for being green and reducing pollution and carbon footprints North Face.
I bought my original Rolling Thunder 20 years ago and it's served me well; traveling around the world a couple of times, and it's still going! It was always going to be a hard act to follow but my new Rolling Thunder didn't disappoint! Stylish with the outstanding North Face quality - I look forward to another 20 years of EXPLORING!!
I have a 4 yr old version of this that has been a go-to for ski trips with the kids, bulky motorcycle gear...long overseas trips, etc. What is great: Hard bottom, big duffel with wheels and a handle. The hard bottom is key--saves wear and tear from airline baggage gorillas, and is easier to slide in and out of vehicles, etc. The dark grey top does get a little grimy from airlines, but wipes down very easily w a damp rag or some cleaning spray. DEAL KILLER...it appears they've changed the hard bottom to a nylon covered bottom??! Why? I'm ready to buy another but not without the hard bottom.
Stewed over buying this big a bag for a recent ski trip to Japan. I have many other large base camp duffles but none with wheels. I was traveling with the fast pack and time is of the essence. No waiting around to should a heavy duffle. I don't buy stuff that I wont use more than once, so it was a big decision for me. Look at other wheels options of similar size and decided on the TNF Rolling Thunder. I was not disappointed. It fit my ski boots, helmet, snow boots, crocks and a bunch of other crap I normally would not take on a mission. Organization was exceptional, and most of all the zippers worked flawlessly under load. I am a stickler for zippers and the size and the large pulls made it easy to round corners with the zippers under tension. Love the load handles and compression straps and could throw it around like a baby Yoda when needed.
Had the old 30" hard bottom style forever. Upgraded to the new one. Love it. Would change one thing and I'm actually surprised the designers did not catch this flaw. The large exterior zipper pocket on top of the clam shell easily gets a failed zipper clasp when zipping which can be solved by having the cinch straps on top of the zipper instead of below the zipper. When you go to cinch the two straps down they pull on the zipper itself. Rather than pulling on top and put no pressure on the zipper, it pulls from under the zipper and strains the zipper itself. Design flaw that could have been easily fixed.
I have traveled with this bag 4 times since purchase. Holds a weeks worth of clothes easily. Handle slides in/out easily. Material feels very durable and so far no moisture has penetrated the bag. Choose the yellow color to stand out at baggage claim. The yellow has gotten really dirty but I assumed that would be the case so I'm not complaining. My one nit pick with the bag would be the cinch straps. I wish there was a system to secure them. After cinching the bag, the straps just flap around waiting to get caught and torn off on a luggage carousal. Having a strap keeper would solve that.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I can't get enough of this suitcase! It's seriously the best travel companion ever. Not only is it super sturdy, but it also fits all my stuff perfectly. And let's talk about style - this baby is a total head-turner! Say hello to stress-free packing and hello to fabulous adventures with my trusty suitcase by my side!
I am a photographer, making 4-5 international trips a year, usually remote areas (Patagonia, Slovenia, Lofoten, Croatia, Africa) The bag served me very well, great handle and a great suspension. BUT, after 3 years the wheels are worn and I tried to buy a replacement set. NorthFace Support said I had to box up the big bag and ship to them for "evaluation". I've explained I have a hex driver to remove them, just sell me a set of wheels+spares.... Don't care how much. I don't want to spend the money to ship the bag back and forth (for "evaluation"), .....that's just silly. Pelican Cases sells replacement wheels, ThinkTank sure does. Tenba sure does. Sure wish you'd consider selling me a set of wheels ....
