Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".
PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and ¾ inch shorter in total rise.
TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Lightweight and Warm
This jacket is incredibly lightweight, comfortable, and warm. Its versatility allows me to layer underneath for a large range of temperatures. I've worn it on cold hikes in 30-degree weather, as well as during walks in the mid-50s with minimal layers. It quickly dried out after some light rain on a hike. It's also perfect for staying warm and cozy around the campsite on chilly evenings. While the sleeves run a bit long, I find this beneficial for covering my hands when gloves aren’t necessary. The elastic cuffs fit snugly around my hands, ensuring my wrists stay warm. The jacket fits true to size; I usually wear an X-Small to Small, and the Small size offers just the right amount of extra room for layering underneath. The unique deep carmine color makes it suitable for casual wear too. The three pockets are quite large and you can easily fit a phone in any of them. I love that it's packable, folding neatly into the left lower pocket, complete with an additional zipper and storage loop. I've included a photo with my hand for size comparison when packed up. It also features two adjustable drawcords on the bottom for a customizable fit around the hips. Overall, I am very satisfied with this jacket. This is my first puffy jacket and I can’t believe I went without one for so long!
Lightweight down jacket
I used this jacket on several overnight backpacks. The weather was damp, raining on and off, with cooler temps between 20-40. The jacket fits well the arm length and overall length is functional. I am 5’5’’ 140lbs and the small fit fine. I personally would prefer a few inches longer in length to cover my bottom, but it wasn’t too short. Because the weather was damp and wet I was worried about the down getting wet, but as long as it’s worn with a rain jacket it kept me warm and repelled the damp air and dried quickly over night. The fabric is lightweight yet durable enough to withstand several brush ups with thorns. There are three zippered pockets; the pocket on the left chest area is big enough to fit a smartphone. The bottom has a draw cord to tighten. Overall it’s a great down jacket.
Warm & Water Resistant Jacket
This jacket was a nice warm red which was quite complementary to most outfits (even though I tend to not wear much of the hue). It would be great for standing out in the backcountry for safety purposes as well. It was quite warm and reflected its rating well, especially for a women's jacket. Its water resistance held up under many different types of rain (see image). It took some time before it soaked through and I stayed warm after walking for 45 minutes in a light to moderate storm. The pockets are functional (yay!), and it was a good length considering I'm quite tall. The only drawback I found was that it was less fitted in the midsection and almost billowed out a bit even after cinching down. It would be easy to layer underneath even if it was taken in a bit, so hopefully future iterations have a bit more tailoring in the middle. Overall, it's a great jacket worth the price.
If a jacket were winter oak leaves; it persists
Great winter jacket! For an 850 down jacket this nearly everything I was looking for in an active down winter coat! The only thing missing is a hood! Maybe next time REI could make version with removable hood for those extra chilly days! The rusty orange fall color is gorgeous!! Reminds me of oak leaves that hang on to the tree through winter! The chest pocket is very large, perfect for storing phone, field notebook, etc. I am about 175lb, 5’9” and usually between L and XL sizes. Glad I went with XL. It gives me plenty of room for layers underneath and doesn’t feel too bulky! Also the sleeves are soooo long! I put my goretex shell over and it fit easily. I was amazed, at 850 down fill, the jacket is light and not bulky either over or under layers! As for insulation, it’s a bit warm for high 30s, but was perfect for low 30 with just long sleeve shirt under. Excited to use it for Wisconsin’s frozen tundra! I did use it when we had some light rain/freezing rain and it held up, though I wouldn’t call it waterproof. Waist of coat goes long enough that it doesn’t ride high when moving around or bending over. The bottom of waist has cinch cord if needed. All in all, definitely recommend!
Serious comfort and perfect warmth
The REI Co-op Women's Magma 850 Down Jacket has quickly become a favorite piece of gear I rarely leave home without. I received this in the Colorado fall and foresee using it almost daily throughout the winter and spring and likely in the summers at high altitude. I am a 5'6" female, weighing about 120 lbs and the size Small fits perfectly. I can extend my arms without the sleeves riding up, and I can stretch my arms up and bend over without the bottom of the jacket riding up too much. I got the dark orange color and love it. It's great for visibility (but not blinding to others), and it's just a really lovely color for a jacket. Comfort-wise, and most importantly, it's warm. Not too warm to cause me to overheat, but provides that essential layer of warmth for an outer layer in the winter (and those unpredictable shoulder seasons). Speaking of those days you may or may not need it, the Magma 850 Down Jacket packs down pretty well... I have a small stuff sack and it's just a little smaller than one running shoe. My only wish is that instead of the front "Napoleon Pocket," there was a secure inner pocket. As a woman, storing anything like a phone, keys, or wallet at chest level (especially just one side) is uncomfortable for me. Overall, this jacket is well constructed, designed, and I expect to be wearing it daily for years to come.
Functional, warm and packable jacket
Have you had a jacket where the function far outweighed the form? This jacket convinced me that red is nothing but a color, and could be helpful to find in my sea of black clothing or in a white out. Certainly give it a great shot—you’ll be reaching for it more than you think! WEARABILITY I did appreciate the softness and warmth level. Having worn this jacket daily in 65degree F weather and just above 35degree F, I was comfortable each time. The amount of layers I could fit under and over without discomfort surprised me! My arm movement during light activities such as walking, chasing after my 5-year-old, hanging outdoors at the lodge, and snow shoeing was great. However, I found this jacket to fit a little short on my long torso, so it did keep riding up above my hips and so I did find myself pulling it down during certain activities. With a light undershirt, there was less of an issue with any shifting when the jacket was fully zipped. It did also fit under my rain shell and under my snow coat with ease. The pockets were deep enough to hold miscellaneous items like lip balm and paper maps but not secure enough for valuables. I was also a bit hesitant to put too many things in the pockets since the jacket was a bit boxy as these come. The collar was a good height where I could throw on a scarf and my hair wouldn’t get caught on any odd edges. There’s a very similar version with a hoodie but since I typically layer my jackets, using this as an under shell, the hood didn’t make sense. I found the stuff pocket very useful and it didn’t seem to matter which pocket (left or right). The zipper on the pocket after stuffing was a little catchy but with a bit of weight, all was well. DURABILITY So with these light weight puffer jackets, I guess the fabric is supposed to be delicate and thin. This also means one has to be very careful when zipping or doing activities, including laundering. Following all the laundry directions closely, including drying with light heat and two, clean tennis balls worked fine. I would caution to check often and also be sure that you’re using quality tennis balls. One of my balls did leave behind a static cling of yellow hairs. The premium balls did not. I will likely swap out the tennis balls for woolen balls in the future. No shedding or poking thru of inner material like my more expensive branded and similar concept jacket either so this was a huge plus as I am one to love washing my jackets after a trip. Zipper-wise, I wasn’t honestly expecting a fantastic experience. I own a Stormhenge and the main zipper is off and on, while the chest pocket zipper is totally out. This jacket proved me wrong - all the zippers are functional and seem to be sewn to a higher standard. Looking forward to more adventures wearing this one. PACKABILITY This part is very important for me because I travel at least once a month. I was looking for a jacket that could be a great travel piece. This was it on my two recent back to back trips! I found it a comfy companion on the plane as temps dropped. It was equally useful while walking in between terminals in the chilly temps outside, as it was on public transport under my rain shell as it decided to downpour. I had also needed to carry my carry-on 46L backpack on top of this jacket and my rain shell. Comfy. Then when it got too hot, I simply de-layered and stuffed this back into its pocket and it fit back nicely into the top pocket of my backpack! I was sold. Later in the hotel when re-packing everything, the red color also helped me to be sure I didn’t leave this helpful closet addition behind. So don’t hesitate to select the Carmine color- it’s actually a very nice shade of red that looks better in photos than you’d think (if you’re not a red-wardrobe person like me).
Very cozy and very lightweight everyday puffer
Really love this jacket! It's super light and squishes down well, great for when it's cold in the morning on the way to work and has warmed up by the afternoon--I can easily stash in my bag. It's also SO warm and cozy. It's kept me really toasty on some frigid and grossly rainy days lately, and it layers well with a flannel or sweatshirt underneath. The zipper goes up to my neck and I can tuck my chin in a bit when it's windy, and the drawcord around the hips is nice to keep drafts out, too. The zipping hand pockets are great, and the chest zip pocket is useful too. Mine is a bright and deep rust color which I love and looks especially great for the autumn. My only complaint is that it would be nice to have interior drop-in pockets, but this isn't a huge deal. Overall a really solid piece for the colder months and something I'm sure I'll keep reaching for every day.
Wonderfully warm down jacket!
The REI Co-op Magma Down Jacket is a fantastic jacket. It fits true to size and has a flattering fit. I received the deep carmine color and it’s a beautiful burgundy. The jacket is very warm and it has zippered pockets in all the right places. The length is perfect and it seems like it made to last many lessons.
Keeping me cozy!
This jacket came at the perfect time, I was heading out for a weekend camping trip in the Sierra National Forest and knew it would be chilly at night. I was surprised how light weight the jacket was so I was a little skeptical if it would keep me warm. It did the job plus some. I forgot my sleeping bag and slept in the jacket and it was so toasty. I sized up because I layer my clothes in the colder months. Ample room to move and didn’t feel like I was stuffed in. Plenty of zippered pockets to store keys or cell phone. This jacket is now my go to jacket, wearing it daily on my morning walks in the chilly Central Valley. We have foggy mornings and the bright color makes me stand out among the other people on the trail.
Nice jacket but noisy
I just received this jacket. The fit is great and it is plenty warm. Only issue is the noise which sounds like crinkly feathers rubbing against adidas pants. I have the REI 650 down jacket as well and it does not make noise like this one does. On the fence on whether I should keep and it's worth the extra $100 compared to the 650 downjacket.
