Sizing Notes

For boots: Add one half size to your street shoe size. You should be able to slip one finger behind your heel when you are standing up with the boot unlaced and your toes touching the front. If the boot is too short, your toes will get smashed walking downhill. Too long and your heel will slide up and down and give you blisters.

Fantastic Bouldering Shoe

Purchased these from the REI website (couldn't find them in any local stores) in three different sizes. I wear a size 12 (45.5 according to the sizing chart) in most shoes and a full size down (44.5) ended up fitting best for me. Despite being tight in the toes, there was virtually no break-in time and I was able to start climbing immediately. They feel more supple than my last shoe (Sportiva Katana Lace) and I trust them wholly. Heel hooks are easier for me and the sharp toe edge keeps me on the wall even on tiny chips. Thanks to REI, I was able to order multiple sizes, land on the perfect size, and return the others to a local store. I could not be happier.

Toe Wears Out In 2 Months

The shoe performs great but for the price, I expected them to be more durable. After 2 months of light to moderate use (mostly in the gym) the toe is already worn through on one shoe. With every other shoe I've owned over the years, I've never had a hole wear in the toe so quickly. I typically get at least 6 months even with heavy use. La Sportiva warranty support doesn't cover "concentrated wear" per their rep so these are going back to REI. I'm not the type of climber that buys multiple pairs of shoes to use based on the route or problem I'm working so I don't see myself owning these again. If you only plan to use them occasionally, I would recommend them. Heel hook, toe hook, edging, smearing, chips are all no problem for this shoe. The wear issue is a real bummer.

Katana velco replacement

I bought these as a replacement for my beloved Katana velcro. I ended up with the same size 44.5. I don't think they stretched / molded as much, but the 45 felt like the right size at the time of purchase, which meant the 44.5 would be the right size. I don't think these quite have the sensitivity of the Katana, which now has C5 replacement rubber, but I look forward to trying the other rubber. Fit is otherwise similar, although maybe the front is stiffer / smaller than the Katana. Tongue is similar which I like. These cost quite a bit more, 175 vs 145, and I was getting sales down to 90 for the Katana.

2nd Pair, Long Durability

La Sportiva has made some excellent shoes. This is my second pair of Otaki's. My first pair lasted from November, 2019 to April, 2021. This included gym climbing sessions 3x a week and during the pandemic, course granite bouldering throughout the Wasatch front. These shoes are weapons on the rock and the sharp toes makes landing those thin edges so much easier. They are incredibly durable and look great too.

Wonderful edging shoe, questionable durability.

Edging performance is great and it's not super aggressive. The shoe never really stretched much compared to my previous Sportiva Finale's so I regret the 1/2 size smaller I got assuming they would stretch so be careful. My street shoe is a 42, and my climbing shoe was 40.5 and I regret it. This is my first performance shoe and I'm pretty disappointed that 7 months later (where most of those months were climbing free due to covid) and the soles are starting to separate in the same spot on both shoes. I also don't climb particularly hard, so I'm pretty let down.

Good climbing shoe, poor durability

I've been wearing these shoes as my primary climbing shoe for about a year and a half. The Otaki's are my first venture into the land of LaSportiva and have been an OK shoe. PROS: Down-turned aggressiveness, comfort, and fast on/off velcro. CONS: The velcro has unvelcroed itself mid-climb a number of times. Also, the sole started to delaminate about a week after the 1 year period... so not returnable. I have never experienced this delamination with any pair of climbing shoes before and for being the most expensive pair of climbing shoes I've ever purchased ($185). They've also lost their rigidity and now it feels like I'm climbing in mushy slippers. I'm very disappointed. I'm switching back to Scarpa's.

Great for the Gym + Outdoors

As a few people have mentioned, these things break in really quickly. I usually wear a US size 9.5 for hiking/tennis shoes, and I went with the 40.5 (US Men's 8) and they fit really well. After 2 days climbing in the gym, they felt great. These things excel on vertical faces and overhangs, and they don't completely murder your feet after a long day of climbing. I haven't taken them out on any slabs yet, but I don't imagine they'd be that great on anything less than vertical. All in all I'd definitely recommend these to anyone into gym + shorter outdoor climbs that doesn't want to buy two pairs of shoes.

Perfect size and feel

I have wider feet and these are great for me on the width, perfect on the length (very very slight toe curl, not painful, not really uncomfortable)... Aggressive and grippy... Have only been using these in the gym, mostly bouldering... I was just compelled to write this review after trying on some TC Pros I'm considering for a full day multi-pitch coming up - Got the TC Pros in the same size (41 in both) and the TC Pros are much more narrow... put these on after wearing those around the house, and even stretching them with stretches, and instantly noticed how much more comfortable this width is. FYI, I also wear a 41 in La Sportiva mountaineering boots ...

New gold standard

Before i purchased these, i was climbing in la sportiva katana lace ups and la sportiva solutions. Overall, I was very happy with this combo. The katanas do it all and are comfortable to wear all day. however, on some of the more techical problems I wanted a better heel or something a little more aggressive. Enter the la sportiva Solution. Solid heel, super agressive, awesome toe - but super uncomfortable! I felt like the precision of the shoe only comes from how delicate you have to be in your footwork to avoid the pain! So i was using the katanas for most climbs, putting on the solutions for only the most difficult climbs. With all that said, the Otakis came thru and took what i liked about both katana and solution and some! It has the best heel i've ever used, great edging, more agressive downturn than the katana but just as comfortable. Also, the straps allow a truly customised fit! Sizing and fit similar to katana lace up

Incredibilty verstatile shoe, but bad durability

I climb 2-3 times a week, mostly outdoors on slabby 10's - I've been using the Otaki's for about 4 months and they are almost at the end of their life. It's a shame bc the rubber is still in great shape, but it's just all detaching from the leather/suede of the shoe. Maybe climbing during the Texas summer has something to do w that? Not sure. That being said, these are incredibly versatile shoes - trad, sport, bouldering, or gym. They are just the best combo of comfort and aggressive. I will continue to wear these to the bitter end, and then buy another pair.

Supreme shoes

Hands down my new favorite shoe! Used different 510's which wore down pretty fast and way more comfortable than my muira vcs. I bought them a full size down from my street shoe and I'm super happy I did. They're very comfortable for an aggressive shoe. My feet only hurt a little after my first time using them for a 3 hour sesh. Now they are super nice. I'm going to stay with the Otaki for a long time in the future because it does everything exceptionally well. Best all around shoe easily. Happy climbing!
