I'm very happy with this jacket. I wanted something breathable but more substantial than the typical REI rain jackets to put up with PNW winter weather. This fits the bill perfectly. Its nice and long, breathes well but hasn't leaked yet and there is no velcro at the top for my hair, scarves or hats to get stuck on. The construction is quality. I know people complained about the non-adjustable hood but I always wear a baseball cap with a hood (since even adjustable hoods never seem to stay in place) and that works just fine for this jacket.
The hood is NOT ADJUSTABLE and falls down to below your nose, totally obscuring vision! I asked 3 employees at REI If I was missing something - some new or unfamiliar way to adjust it (like the usual velcro or toggle at the back of the hood) No it is just badly designed. I have been looking for years for a new rain jacket - thigh length, snaps, not velcro on the storm placket, roomy enough to wear a fleece under, not black, white or an ugly color. I thought an adjustable hood would be a given.
I’d been wanting a rain coat that is long enough to cover my bum while still easy to walk in. Something not completely unflattering. Something with actually waterproof pockets. And something that was actually waterproof (I’ve had some membrane failures from other brands in the last couple years). This jacket is all of these things. I walked two hours in the pouring rain and was totally dry. I understand the complaints about the hood, and while I agree it can be a touch annoying depending on how I’m walking, I can put my very thick hair into a pony tail or bun, wear glasses and still be covered. I wish it had pit zips, but it’s still surprisingly breathable. I wouldn’t wear it for a hike that’s more strenuous, but for walking around Seattle and Vancouver or going on easier hikes, perfect. I have big hips and a large bust, and it wasn’t tight on either. I’d say it runs a touch large, which I like so I can wear a thick wool sweater underneath. I love the purple gray color. I would buy it again. Very pleased with this for long urban walks and low intensity hikes.
I am not sure how others who have criticized the hood missed the internal pulleys....They lie on the inside of the hood, just inside the back of your jaw. I find that the hood is easily adjustable to be comfortable, especially if I wear some sort of winter hat beneath. I love that this trench can basically act as a more useful poncho given the cut & style. The seams for the zipper were carefully placed on an angle to avoid water getting into your seams, even though they also are waterproof seams. Lots of thought into this coat.
I am on the fence about this rain jacket. The pros include its quality construction I don't think any rain will soak through or leak in the seams and am confident you'd stay dry in a downpour. And I love, love, love the grey/lavender color--it complements grey, rainy days perfectly while also adding a bit of whimsy to the day. However, for the price point, I'm not keen on a few details, such as the exterior chest pocket, which I really wish was on the inside. And, as others have mentioned, the hood tends to cover your eyes for any significant amount of time. Overall, a solid choice if these minor details won't deter you based on the price point. I'm still debating whether to keep it or return it.
Love this coat! It's long and definitely waterproof (unlike another brand raincoat that didn't last 2 months). I love the color, too. Only thing I would like to see is an adjustable velcro hood strap like the REI Rainier Long Line Rain Jacket has.
Love the length and color. However,I wore it only once.Because: *the hood is ridiculous! I couldn't see a thing because , with the bill, it came down way beneath my eyes *the zipper was sticky at the bottom * don't like the slanted pockets. Very disappointing because OR stuff is usually very well designed.
So disappointed. Had to return. The hood is too large. No matter how you adjust it falls below eyes.
I love the coat! I’ve worn it only a few times in the rain, but so far is fully waterproof and also stylish and a great color,
loved jacket except for hood. Not adjustable enough for good peripheral vision. Deal breaker.
