This pan is so, SO close to being perfect for car campers, but it will depend on what type of stove or grill you have available. For cast iron, it is not overly heavy, and the tall handles make it easier to grab off a hot grill. The tall handles also make it a little harder to store as they take up more space than most. The bottom is also not flat, so I wouldn't try to use this inside on a glass top stove. My camping trip I had planned to use this for was cancelled due to bad weather, so I ended up using it on my own outdoor grill. With it being 10" in diameter, it ended up being too small for what I had set to cook, so I did need to do it in batches. The pan itself heated up evenly, and I didn't notice any spots that were getting hotter than others - this would be super helpful if using it for breakfast with some eggs as you don't need to move things around to keep it from getting scorched. The main drawback for me comes back to the higher handles. Because they're higher than most, they also jut out a lot more, and it wouldn't sit evenly over my camping stove if I have the sides put up to block the wind (which I almost always do). You could angle it so the handles were sitting with one out towards you, but at least for me, I know I'd end up hitting it and knocking it off the grill and on myself or the ground. If you don't use the wind guards you won't have that issue, but for those of us that always end up having a bunch of wind come through when trying to cook, that's not an option. It would be perfect for those that are lucky enough to never have burn bans when camping and can use it over an actual fire. Clean up was easy, and I let it sit until it was cold, and nothing stuck to the inside. I don't think I'd reach for this as my go to car camping skillet, as even if I do keep the wind guards down, I'd still only be able to have a tiny pot on the other burner (again, the handle design kind of messes it up and prevents you from having another larger skillet on the 2nd burner). It will definitely be used for grilling on a home grill, though it would be best for smaller portioned food, and not a big group meal due to the size.
Like most cast iron I've cooked with, it take a little time to heat up, but once hot it holds heat nicely. The two handles on the side make it easier to handle and move than a normal cast iron with a single handle, especially outdoors/over an open flame.
I have used other cast iron pans before, and this one works very well. I have always liked the flavor you get on a good sear cooking a steak from cast iron and frying eggs and bacon for morning breakfast is one of my favorite things to cook in cast iron. This pan does all of those really well. I have used other pans that have the traditional handle that sticks out and this one is different in that the handles are on top. For me, this works well to not interfere with other items I am cooking on the stove. It also helps it store more neatly in the space I have for it. Overall, I would recommend this pan for anyone wanting a cast iron pan.
After using (and ruining) a few household pans on my tiny Weber gas grill while car camping, I figured it might be time to try something better suited for the task. This cast iron skillet is absolutely perfect for that kind of cooking. It's deep enough to contain things like casseroles or stews while also being small enough to fit in the grill with the lid closed. I also like that the handles are positioned in a way that the skillet could be suspended over a campfire for foods that require less direct heat. This definitely feels like premium cookware and it's pretty hard to beat the versatility of cast iron. If you want one skillet that can be used with pretty much any heat source in a campground or at home, this is definitely a good choice.
I used the Le Creuset Alpine Outdoor 10" Skillet on a car camping trip to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area near Las Vegas, NV. It was so easy to use and didn't require seasoning! I could use it basically out of the box. We made vegan burgers that were cooked to perfection thanks to the open flame-ready design. And clean up was so easy with just wiping it clean with a cloth and it was ready for breakfast! I love using cast iron skillets to make pancakes because it creates that perfect crust on the ends and this skillet did not disappoint. This will be a permanent part of my car camping kitchen from now on.
We are in Florida so grilling is a year-round several times per week experience for us. I received the grill pan for fathers;'s day and have grilled 100% of our grill meals on it ever since. Have to cook at a little lower heat (400-450) but withe cast iron it only adds a minute or two. The good stuff: NO FLAREUPS!, no over charred meat ends, no messy grill clean up, kitchen sink cleanup is a snap. Highly recommend or grillers.
All 3 pieces of the Alpine set are great additions to any outdoor grilling setup. Functional and food turns out great. Easy cleanup. Highly recommended for any outdoor grilled / smoker.
