Used to Carry Camping Gear (Checked Luggage)

I bought one of these duffels recently for a trip (I was flying from Boston). I already had a 40L and (2) of the 60L size, which I love, but needed a little more space to bring gear for this particular trip. I packed (1) 60L with my clothes, shoes, and toiletries, used my hiking bag as my carry-on for my camera & other electronics, and packed this 100L with all of my camping and hiking gear for a week of car camping in Utah. Once packed, it weighed about 40-45 lbs. I checked both REI Roadtripper Duffels and they survived the baggage handlers, as well as regular use pulling things in & out during the full week of my trip. These are simple, basic duffels that are sturdy enough to survive a plane trip, and flexible enough to fold down for storage when not in use. They are decently priced for the quality, and you often can get them at a discount during REI's sales. I wish the larger sizes came in prints as well as the solid colors, but the good thing is you can get different colors and color-code to organize your gear or for your trip.

Roadtripper 100 Duffel not good

Rarely do I get a product from REI that doesn't work, but this duffel bag doesn't work. I got it to put my 65 liter pack in. The pack won't even fit. I can't even close the zipper. It doesn't seem to be 100 liters.

Good bag, durable, good for travel.

Great duffel bag for stuffing everything. It's durable enough that I was able to stuff clothes, shoes, Christmas presents, etc. weighing about 50lbs and it survived as a checked-bag being thrown around through air travel. The only weird thing about it is the shoulder strap. The loops that hold the bag are on each of the four corners of the bag. This forces you to attach the strap either diagonally across the bag or on one side. This makes for weird and inconvenient carrying if you use the strap. I wish they put loops at the middle of each short end - like other duffel bags. Besides that, it really is a great bag and for a really great price as well!

Can't go wrong with this duffel

A great duffel for a short getaway. It's surprising how a 100-litre duffel can seem small, but one may have to be creative to stuff this bag. Probably best suited for a trip less than a week long - summer clothes might allow you to stretch that a little bit more. Construction is top-notch as expected from REI. Bought this for my daughter living out of state for school, and she picked this color that I would probably never choose but it looks good! You could spend much more for a big-brand bag, but this one is more than enough for the job - call it the "sensible" choice.

Durable, and huge!

I used this bag on a trip to Hawaii, and was able to fit a surprising amount of my belongings. It replaced a large suitcase, and worked really well with my packing cubes. We were able to stuff 5 days worth of clothes for two adults and one child. It’s made of a durable canvas material, comes with a shoulder strap and two hand-carry straps. It also has straps on the long ends of the bags. The stitching is very high quality, and I have no doubts this bag will last for years. This bag will be perfect for any road trips. My only gripe is that the bag’s straps should allow you to carry it as a large backpack.

Well below REI standards

I have a LOT of REI gear, and have done a lot of shopping at REI for other brands. This bag does NOT meet REI standards. We actually have a couple of these bags for road trips, kid's summer camp, etc. Bought another about a month ago to check some gear for a sailing trip. After one flight, the bottom was full of holes. I recommend sticking with other brands, such as the Patagonia Black Hole series. I also have several of those and they have been indestructible over years of legit abuse. Plus, Patagonia has a really good replacement policy - basically lifetime to encourage people not to just throw gear away. Which brings me to my second issue. I brought the bag back to the REI and suggested it was defective and should be replaced as it must be intended to last more than one flight as checked. The clerk basically told me that's essentially what to expect and kind of scoffed at the idea that they would replace it. I guess you should just think of these bags as disposable if even REI thinks they're good for no more than one flight? Anyway, maybe I'm getting unreasonably demanding in my old age, but I was kind of bummed out by both the poor quality of the product, and the way this particular REI handled it. I'm sure I'll still spend way too much money at REI, but may be more likely to stick to other brands of gear going forward.

Great basic duffle bag

The Roadtripper is a solid, well made duffle bag. You really can't do all that wrong. Material is well switched and strong, strap and handles work well. The price is good, given that it is only a duffle bag. However, features are limited. It's just a duffle bag. If you want extra straps, relocatable straps, backpack option, more internal and external pouches, ect, go with the REI Co-op Big Haul duffle. For me, the increase in price would be worth it. But, if you want a simple and sturdy duffle, then go with the Roadtripper.

Great for car trips!

This bag has gone on 2 trips with me so far, and looks brand new. The bag has a nice balance between sturdy yet not heavy. Its carrying handles are padded and sturdy, it has grab handles on the ends so it's easy to pull out of the trunk, and it comes with an extra strap so you can carry it over your shoulder. It's handy that you can put large items in it, and there is one small flat pocket on the outside, but sadly there is no pocket on the inside. However, it comes with a storage pouch for stashing it at home (10"x11"x3"), and I used that pouch to store things on the trip--the pouch even has a sturdy handle so I could hang it. I could probably fit 2 stuffed sleeping bags, 2 pads, and more into this 100L bag. Like most duffels, it's a bit awkward to load, but when loading the car, I could fit it into odd-shaped spaces.

Perfect size and sturdy!

I purchased this to take in my suitcase on a recent trip to reduce the amount of luggage we need to check on departure. On our return trip, we packed this full with 50 pounds of souvenirs and used it as one of our checked luggage. It worked perfectly and I will be purchasing an additional duffel for future trips. Great quality

Great, bare bones duffel

I’ve used this for winter camping and hunting, and at 100 liters (and $50 on sale), it’s exactly what I need. It’s fairly durable. The straps work well and seem placed right. I do suspect putting a hole through this at some point, but the fabric seems pretty tough. It’s not terribly water resistant, losing it a star, but otherwise, it’s a really solid bag for the money. Held up to pulling a sled in winter, getting tossed around the truck during deer season, and hauling my stuff between MN and WI.

really great for air travel

I didn't want to break the bank on a duffel to send my backpack and this REI had great reviews. Nice that it folds into itself (a bag) for storage when you are on the trail. I put a full Gregory Baltoro 75 (with a BV500) including a tent, umbrella and shoes. all fit well. the only thing that would make this better is the strap 1) it should be detachable (have to tie loose ends in a knot to get on plane) 2) a cushion pad on the strap to spread weight. My pack was 41 lbs and with the adjustability of the strap tied it was hard to carry on the shoulder.
