The perfect haul for inflatable kayak!
After getting the Big Haul 90 for hubs to carry his Kokopelli XPD pack raft & gear, I got this one in hopes that my SeaEagle kayak would fit inside - and it DID! Since purchasing I’ve now got my own Kokopelli (Rogue). Everything - packraft, pump, seat, backrest, pfd, & miscellaneous gear fits nicely & easily inside my Big Haul 120 & the pockets help keep me organized, In backpack mode I clip my two piece paddle onto each side with the side straps, Once my packraft is inflated I can fold up my bag with pump inside & strap it to the raft - bonus is the side strap make a handy holder for my water bottle! This is our third Big Haul - we really like them!
A significant downgrade from a few years ago.
I own the 90L version of this duffel that I bought in 2018 and I am surprised how much the quality on this thing seems to have dropped since then. The first thing I noticed was the bag straps had plastic anchors (the old ones had metal ones) a shocking change since this is a bigger bag that you would think will hold heavier things. Upon further inspection they also lost some of their support. I don’t know if the switch to Velcro was a downgrade or upgrade but I think I preferred the buttons on the strap that connects the handles together. The zippers are different too, again they seem cheaper. The daisy chain used to be a double layered strap and now it’s single layer (it seems well sewn, but it has lost some of the accented color and may be less durable). The buckles seem stronger (thicker) but more generic. Utility wise this may be an upgrade but I’m skeptical based on the other changes. Overall the bag design just seems a lot simpler, cheaper, and a less durable in some critical areas. The overall fabric (or whatever it is called) and stitching seems the same but the bags have lost something some of the style they had and introduced some areas where it could break more easily.
Returning
I don’t like the way the backpack straps are tucked into an open pocket. If I check this in, the straps can easily come out of the pocket. Also, I don’t like the strap connections to the bag. I can see them coming out. Other than that the fabric seems ok. Anyway I’ll be returning it.
Awesome Bag
I have had this for a couple years now and it goes with me on every camping/climbing trip. Big enough to hold my 40l backpack filled with climbing gear/rope/rack, tent, sleeping bag, pad, clothes, food, and all the gear I need for a big trip. Fits dimensions for checked bags. Backpack straps are a nice feature when walking around an airport or a short approach to a campsite but you wouldn’t want to walk a long ways with it on. 2 zippered pockets are a nice feature for organizing miscellaneous items. This bag is a game changer if you travel with a lot of gear and want to be able to keep it all in one bag.
Great Camping Bag!
This is a great BIG bag. My sons and I went on a 10day canoeing trek on the US/Canadian border in July and I had ALL of my gear in this bag with PLENTY of room to spare and it even survived the airplane ride with a layover!. Solid build, and the compression straps and backpack shoulder straps were KEY as we had about a mile hike from parking area to campsite. Soooo happy that I made this purchase!
Great Bag In The Past
I love these bag! I have purchased multiple bags in the past for friends and family. I just purchased a new one for myself, and the quality is not the same. What used to be metal is now plastic, and even the zipper seems to be of a lesser quality… Well we will see the bag is going on it’s first trip to Big Sky, MT I will write a follow up review to let you know how it hold up to travel. Photo included to show the differences.
Loads of room for active weekends
I needed a durable duffel that could fit all of my gear for multi-day cycling trips versus having to schlep everything around in multiple bags. I can fit all of my cycling gear, incl. helmet, shoes, snacks, kit, etc. plus my toiletries, plenty of cozy clothes and my pillow and sleeping bag... all inside of this duffel! I had a two-day bike race weekend and my friend offered to help me unload my car when I arrived at our AirBnB; she was shocked that I only had one bag. So easy! I use packing cubes inside the duffel to stay organized and the strap options make transport a breeze. It's perfect for long active weekends or car-camping tips. I'm very happy with this purchase.
not made as they were
We bought 2 of the 90L bags back in 2019, they have been great. I bought this 120L bag this yr, 2022 and noticed right away the material was thinner and the handle lengths are to small to grab when the bag is full. I took it on 2 plane trips, used a cart once i picked up to haul the bags, no dragging. well there is already a few holes on the bottom, so not near as great as my other 2 bags that have been on countless trips and up Kili. i would not suggest buying, over priced for what they now are.
Backpack strap ripped off
Strap for right shoulder ripped off after the one year return period is passed. Not exactly reliable or long lasting. One more addition to the landfill. When will REI offer a military grade long lasting duffel?
Great bag
Great bag. Got added on to a Yellowstone trip last min with my folks. They had a camper van for themselves but i needed to pack all my own gear. I was able to fit my 2p tent, big comfy pad, 0f bag, an inflatable pillow, a 2p hammock, 3 pairs of shoes, and all the clothes that I needed for 8 days in there. Yes, its a little big, but aren't you looking at it because you want a big bag? The backpack option is wonderful.
