Favorite Trail, Street, or Work Shoe
I’ve had several pairs of these great shoes. My last pair gave me 2,056 miles of use. I started wearing them April 9th, 2021 and just retired them March 20th, 2022. These shoes have been on all my journeys and at work every day. I’ve hiked in the Rockies and Wasatch mountains. They have been my constant companions in slot canyons, washes, and canyoneering. About 310 miles of the 2,056 miles were hiking and adventuring. They are still comfortable and have never cause a blister. If the uppers were not ripped and tattered, I imagine that I could get another 100 miles of comfort out of these bad boys!
Failing after 5 weeks
I had the previous version of the Spire GTX and wore it out before it ever fell apart. They were great. The new version is very similar but a bit different. I purchased the new version because I couldn't find the old version. Five weeks later and about 50 easy miles after purchase, I started hearing noise from the midsole on every step; regardless of terrain. Nothing is loose outside, so it's already got some internal delamination problems. Very disappointed in the quality on this newer style.
The Only Shoe I've Worn For Almost A Decade
I'm now retired, and I walk 6-8 miles a day, mostly walking our five dogs. These are the only shoes on the market that work for me now. I've tried others when these have not been available, but they're just not up to it (including other LaSportiva shoes). I'm glad to see these are back at REI; I've had to buy them elsewhere for the last 2-3 years. They offer great support, are 100% waterproof, and are the most comfortable shoes I've worn in the last decade. I usually pull out the insoles they come with, and put in some Dr Scholl ones for additional comfort. They are also versatile; I wear them for literally every activity I do now... hiking, biking, kayaking, and general everyday wear, meaning that they are now the only shoes I wear. I must say I did prefer the old color, but in every other respect, they're the same great shoes they've always been. At my current rate of usage (mentioned above), each pair lasts 4-6 months; but remember, that's 6-8 miles EVERY day. I can't recommend these shoes highly enough. Thanks for bringing them back, REI!
An excellent shoe , now with even better looks!
I'm several hikes into my third set of Spire GTX hiking shoes and the new version seems to every bit as good as the outgoing model with even better looks! The new styling looks even better in person. The only complain that I've ever had with these shoes is that the laces don't seem to hold up very well compared to the rest of the shoe. TBD on if the laces on this updated version are just a new color (black now instead of gray) or if they're a little more durable as well. Overall a fantastic shoe though! Fit is great, good ground feel while still providing protection from sharp rocks and good cushioning. Excellent traction and stability. By far my favorite hiking shoe out there.
Too wide
I bought these shoes to replace my Trail Ridge Low 10.5. I love the narrow width of La Sportiva Shoes, and was looking forward to this pair. I ordered the same size as my TL-Low (10.5) and these Spire GTX were WAY to big. I returned them for a 10.0, which were the right length, but the width is very wide for my feet. I've hiked in them for 2 days and they are very uncomfortable with a lot of heal slip. I also have to cinch them all the way such that my feet hurt in order to have a decent fit. I think they would be fine for the right foot, but I'm disappointed that La Sportiva has such variability in their sizing. And unfortunately they no longer make the Trail Ridge Low.
One of the best (if not THE best) low cut hikers
Purchased these after poring through reviews for technical low hikers/approach shoes. I wore them for a week and immediately purchased a second pair I liked them so much. I rarely do that before gauging a shoes durability but was convinced within a week that I would be replacing them with the same shoe. They do run very large so I had to send a few back to get the right fit. They're very roomy as a technical hiker/approach should be for carrying loads so that caused me to size down a full size. One of the most breathable if not the THE most breathable goretex shoe I've owned. Fantastic low boot.
Super-sized!
I have long experience with Sportiva sizing - these run a full size larger. Kudos to REI for processing my several returns, a big size change like this makes online shopping a frustration. Still a big fan of the light weight, rock and weather protection these shoes offer. My other Sportivas in the same category have been impressively durable with those things in mind.
Very versatile, great waterproofing
I bought these shoes several weeks ago ahead of a big backpacking trip on the AT. I just got back from the trip and enjoyed these shoes so much I felt compelled to give a review. I am a college student who does a decent amount of outdoor activities and wanted something versatile that could handle everything from day hikes to big backpacking trips. This shoe definitely met and exceeded my expectations. The biggest selling point of these shoes for me was the waterproof capabilities. This Gore-Tex stuff is incredible. I wore these shoes to class in heavy rain to break them in and my feet stayed dry all day. Same goes for when we encountered small springs or creeks on the trail. The waterproof material keeps all water out as long as it stays below the top of the shoe. I was really impressed with the grip of these shoes. There were some times on the trail where I wish I had the extra ankle support of a taller boot but the vibram grip on these still kept up really well. Just make sure you're very conscious with your foot placement and you'll be good. I personally really like the design of these shoes. I know the bright green isn't for everyone but it's used in moderation here and I like the green accent. The the outside of the shoe has held up really well so far and they are super breathable even while being waterproof. The mid-grade nature of these shoes means that they're not super heavy or bulky but they're still pretty tough, waterproof and provide all the necessary means for hiking on tough trails. Yes, these shoes are a bit pricey but I think its a worthy investment when it comes to an activity like hiking/backpacking where you don't want any doubts about your gear. In the future I will continue to use these for day hikes, backpacking trips and even walking to class on rainy days. They're great, versatile shoes and I highly recommend them.
Comfortable, Durable, Cool in Heat.
I purchased these shoes for work. I spend a lot of time in the mud, poor weather, heat, on concrete so on and so fourth. I wear these 18 hours a day four days out of the week and I've never in my life had a more comfortable and durable shoe. I also get on the trail once a month or so and they are just as wonderful there. Killer in the gym for training. To add on, I have very flat feet and the support here is second to none. In my business I use harsh chemicals that have made many other shoes and work boots fall to pieces in a couple of months. These on the other hand are out of this world. I have purchased a pair for my father and best friend because I love both of them and they should be able to be as comfortable as I have been. Best shoe I have ever purchased.
