For boots: Add one half size to your street shoe size. You should be able to slip one finger behind your heel when you are standing up with the boot unlaced and your toes touching the front. If the boot is too short, your toes will get smashed walking downhill. Too long and your heel will slide up and down and give you blisters.

I have both the standard and GTX versions of the Akyra II and have put around 100 miles on each pair. The biggest complaint about Sportiva is the fit, I went with what they recommended for me and got a half size more than my normal hiker and good fit. Comfort is relative to a person’s feet and these work for my feet. I’m not sure what alien technology La Sportiva uses to make these out-soles because they grip! This new FriXion Red is great for all conditions I’ve put it up against. These things had no problem with rock (wet), skree, river crossings, snow, and had no problems doing steep up/down hill on ice. The thing that really stands out is I’ve worn both pairs against my trail nemesis, MUD. Until these shoes I had never made it through long stretches of mud unassisted without some type of slipping and usually ending up on my bottom or worse. These shoes run through it with no issues gripping as if they are some type of mud spikes. Listen I really like the performance of these shoes, I’ve taken them on class 3 and very low class 4 scrambling and they held up. The durability of these things seem to be going strong as both pairs after many miles of hiking and scrambling they’re still structurally solid. As I said above, I have the standard and GTX shoes and love both. I will be posting the same review for both as many places as I can as I am excited for others to give them a try and see if they’re a good fit for them as well. La Sportiva, thanks for this gem. Thank you REI for being the first to put these on sell.
Love these hiking shoes, I've hiked about 150 miles so far in all kinds of weather and terrain, snow, sand, snowy mush, mud, etc, and they have been great. No leaks of any kind with the gore-tex, and a great fit. I typically wear a 13 in US sizing, and prefer narrow shoes. The 13.5 US size (47.5 EU) fit me well. As we've had our snowmelt this spring in Montana, I've taken to just hiking through the water /slush in the center of the trail rather than picking my way along the edges of the trail - that's how well the waterproof liners in these shoes work. No worries at all about water leakage. The lug pattern has a great grip, I've not had to worry about putting on spikes except in the iciest conditions. They've held up well. Most of my hiking was around Moab, and the sand wore down the heel a bit as seen in the photos, but I think that is normal wear for the abrasive conditions. They kept out sand well which was very happy with.
Excellent first impression so far over the first ~50 miles. The fit is a bit snug but it helps my feet feel more in control. It's a very solid shoe with good traction. I was able to put on micro-spikes without feeling like my foot was being squeezed. The only question now is how durable they are and how much they'll stand up to the hundreds and hundreds of miles I'll be putting on them this summer. Will update review in July/August with long-term impressions.
This shoe is not even remotely waterproof. The problem I believe is the cloth outer layer, which absorbs moisture when doing something as mundane as walking through wet grass. The water finds its way into the shoe after about an hour and my toes were soaked. This is my third pair of La Sportiva shoes, and the first pair I have had to return. Very disappointing, as this the best fit out there for my narrow foot.
10 miles on rocky, muddy, at times very slick trails in north Alabama. Amazing grip, lite weight with a great sole for absorbing all the limestone rock. I am impressed so far. Normally wear 14/14w/15 with thick hiking socks. 15.5/49.5 works great.
