Mountain Hard-wear an unpractically small product

I've been eyeing this jacket for years and with the sale I figured what better time than now. This product has a near mythical or legendary reputation - it's time for mine! Initial product quality seems fantastic, the Dark Caspian color is great, and it's even lighter than I imagined, but the sizing ... WHAT? With just a base layer on - the pinch and tightness on the back of my underarm is uncomfortable at best, unpractical and a tear waiting to happen. Wearing it while driving my car was awful, and I can't imagine relying on it's lack of mobility in the alpine - whether on a scramble or reaching for a water bottle on a pack. I'm 6'1 - 190 lbs. Rather slender, slightly broad shoulders and have a 41" chest size. I border on the large side of medium or small side of large - typically. Size large from MHW states chest size 41"-43". The sweater's length is a minor concern as well - sits directly at the belt line (cold belly drafts are not ideal). Sleeve length is perfect thought - spot on 35". Waist size is dead on as well. With all the "measurements" being correct - how come the only way I don't have an aggressive pinch is if I'm standing still with my arms at my sides? Any other angle or movement beyond that is a literal pain. This 100% feels like what happens when I try most Medium sized products. (Confirmed: my product is size L). I know sizing is different for each company. I'm an avid Patagonia guy - but I'm often cursing them for their "slightly larger sizing" which doesn't have that "slim look" style that I typically prefer (Size - Large). This MHW product LOOKS great on - very slim. I'm not buying a jacket to look good standing in a photo - a welcomed bonus, however. The sizing mentality from Patagonia is entirely for function on trail - allowing you to have layering flexibility and mobility for the active pursuits your buying it for. I'm not even sure if I could manage a light mid layer under this MHW down sweater. What I can't understand is how I'm the first person (I've read soooo many reviews) to mention this sizing issue. With that said - I'm not sure if this is a one off or defect but I certainly don't want to order an XL to find out. I'm just a little disappointed but I let every other person's hype about the product set a very high bar for it. I'm just having a hard time accepting that a company and product with the reputation such as this would honestly size a Large like that and call it a "standard fit". Last note: I bought the Ghost Whisperer pants a few months back and those pants seem notably warmer or loftier than the jacket. Those pants are like a furnace when you put them on. This jacket feels quite warm but doesn't have that instant heat retention and radiance. Not a complaint there - just an observation. All-in-all, bummer dude. I was so ready to fall in love but I'm left broken hearted. Matty Peaks, back to Patagonia. Over and out.

Battle tested and worth every penny

I live in Vermont, so the Green and White Mountains are my usual destinations during winter. As such, I have invested a lot in gear. I have down jackets from OR, Patagonia, Eddie Bauer, and then a Ghost Whisperer. I heard that the Whisperer was the most highly rated in its class, but I doubted that it could be that much better, which is part of why I bought the others first. When I finally bought it, I was nervous that its super-thin fabric would be fragile out in the woods, getting nicked by tree branches and bumping rocks, etc. However, it has proven to be a workhorse and it is now one of my most trusted pieces of gear. I can honestly say that I trust my life with it on my winter adventures. I am pretty tolerant of cold weather, and with just a base layer and the GW, I can stay comfortable in the teens and low 20s. It is significantly more packable and lighter than my other jackets, as well. If you are used to jackets from other manufacturers, you will notice the differences for yourself. You will not regret the investment.

Super warm and weighs next to nothing

The perfect insulted layer to take on long hikes or multipitch climbs in any season; my go-to when I need wind-stopping insulation, but have no weight or room to spare. I love the fact that I can pack it into it's own pocket (tiny!), clip it to my harness, climb a pitch in my base-layer, then deploy it and put it on to stay nice and warm at the belay. It's warm and weighs next to nothing. Don't leave the car without one!

Fits outstandingly well

I absolutely love this jacket. The weight/packability, color, fit, and the warmth are all outstanding. It looks great everywhere from the driveway, The grocery store parking lot, and all over the back country. The only thing keeping me from giving this full marks is how delicate the outer shell can be. You’re paying for ultralight and unfortunately that comes with durability drawbacks. Even when not bushwhacking and just on a well-maintained trail, watch out for any small branches or sticks that might be sticking out into the trail, it will snag this jacket. Know what you’re buying and you will have one of the best UL down puffies on the market.

Best Functional Down Jacket.

I have done everything in this jacket from back country adventures in snow, camping trips in the mountains and even just worn around town. I've never been cold and the design of the baffles keeps it from ever feeling bulky. The water resistance is very good for this type of jacket and the elastic design of the hood is awesome. Packs down nice and small and has proven to be very durable thus far. I highly recommend this jacket.

Best Jacket Ive Ever Owned

For those complaining about durability: this jacket is 8oz! it's not intended to be hucked thru the trees, that's what puffers with heavy ripstop fabric are for, they generally weigh 20-3x more than this jacket. Ive worn this jacket on long, freezing cold photoshoots in the ice and snow; ive worn it boating down freezing rivers at 20 degrees. The jacket is easy to mend with a little aquaseal, it takes less than one minute (not mtn. hardware recommended i doubt but it works for mine). There isnt a jacket made that's equals this items warmth to weight ratio. The fact you can wear a t-shirt in 20 degree weather and stay warm and dry speaks to the quality. I own both the OG ghost whisperer and the Ghost 2 w/hood. This is the first product ive written a review about, it's that good. Mtn hardware. warranty is awesome. my OG jacket needed a new zipper- mtn hardware had it back to me in a week or two, no charge. Buy it.

Puffy multi-tool!

I've owned a lot of puffies over the years in a variety of weights, styles and functions. This one is by far the best all a rounder I have ever had. It fits perfect (I'm a size large and athletic fit). The hood provides great coverage while also plenty of vision. I have used it to prevent flash freezing during pauses in athletic pursuits in the mountains and also on casual hikes. The coating repels light snow and drizzle. I've worn multiple configurations of base layers with it. The materials glide over base layers and did not restrict movement when scrambling around on rock. Also, it's stylish enough for an adult beverage establishment without looking like you just wandered off of a polar expedition.

I think I'm In Love.

This thing is so light, so warm, and so comfortable. It's the perfect middle layer (between a wool baselayer and rock solid jacket). To be fair, this is my first 'real' puffy. What have I been doing all my life? Only challenge is that I like wearing it biking on the morning commute so much I'm worried it'll be used up before my next camping trip. Things to note: - Folds in to either hand pocket. At first, I thought it would fold in to a special storage pocket. Not the case. Probably a weight saving decision. - So light, you can't tell you have it in your pack. - Zippers and ripstop nylon have a very high quality feel to them. - Runs a little large -- Small fits my medium-small frame well. I'm 5'9" 165lbs and the small fits perfectly.

Awesome Gear!

I got this jacket as a gift from my wife. I love the instant warmth of puffy jackets but most times once I start moving around they don't seem to breath well and I often overheat. The Ghost Whisperer is super light, warm and very breathable. It also packs well for those times when you need to stay warm while standing around after a bike ride in winter. I haven't tested it as a layer in extreme cold but judging from my experience in 35-50 degree temps I imagine it will pair well with a shell in colder ski conditions. 2 thumbs up!
