Bait and Switch w/ the lack of drop pockets
My initial impressions since I just got this jacket and have yet to live with it; It's a very nice jacket and the fit is perfect for me. Normally my other Patagonia jackets or tops have a really short torso length but this is slightly longer which I much prefer. The sleeve length is perfect for me too with my longer arms. The description made it seem like the outer fabric would be almost shell-like and I worried it would be too thick, but in reality, it's not overly thick and is 'just-right'. It's not uber thin - you'd get really warm wearing this in anything above 65-70 F. My biggest complaint: They could've easily incorporated inner drop pockets, but instead, the front hand pockets are not attached to the inside of the jacket at the bottom (see pictures). So your hand can go through. This seems like such a wasted opportunity. Literally ALL they had to do was attach at the bottom and there would be more pockets. Design oversight? Intentional omission to create inconvenience so you'll buy a different product? Hard to say. Initially, when I opened the jacket, I momentarily got excited thinking there were drop pockets, but was immediately disappointed. These 'unfinished inner drop pockets' create another issue; it's easy to catch your fingers on them when you zip up the jacket. Naturally, when you put on the jacket, and grab the bottom front portion of the face on either side of the zipper, your fingers wrap around the bottom edge of the front face fabric. If you try sliding your hands closer to the zipper (which you normally do when lining up the zipper teeth) your fingers get snagged on the 'unfinished inner drop pockets'. Over time I feel like something will tear. If I keep this I may just use contact cement and attach the fabric at the bottom and make my own drop pockets. I'm considering returning and getting a different similar Patagonia jacket, but it seems like they intentionally design their jackets so not one has all the features you'd want. Eg: the R1 Techface Hoodie has 2 hand pockets and a chest pocket, but the non-hooded version doesn't have the chest pocket. Why not just keep it consistent? It's like they The one jacket I've seen that has all the things I'd want is the R2 Techface Jacket (hand pockets, chest pocket, inner drop pockets) but it's too insulated for my desires.
Perfect Sweatshirt Jacket
I purchased the R1 thermal as a replacement for my old R1 Daily jacket. I wear these thermal jackets as a daily sweatshirt jacket over just about every shirt I own. It is surprisingly warm for how light it is, and it would layer well in cold conditions. The stitching and zippers are a significant upgrade over the R1 daily, Highly recommended.
Great for layering
Looking for a jacket that is a jacket and not a sweater. Yes this piece is great for layering My need is an everyday jacket
