life time purchase
So there I was, outdoor climbing on a dry November day in 2019, freezing as always. A buddy let me borrow his coat, which happened to be a men's Ghost Whisperer. I hadn’t known that a coat could leave you feeling warm, like really, truly cozy in the outdoor elements. I bought one that same day. It is now 2023 and I wear this coat most days in Fall, Winter, and Spring in the PNW. (Heavy usage) I wear it backpacking, snowboarding, hiking, and when I am working at my barista job and while working my outdoor job as a rec guide. It somehow regulates temperature really well, I do not often sweat in it. Since it seems like it would tear easily, I typically wear it as an insulating layer, with something over it, and it has held up remarkably well. Just this year, I got my first tear in it and I put my first proud patch on it. Side note: in my 3+ years of owning it, I have washed it twice. It smells fine and it looks brand new. :) The only drawback I see in this coat is a personal one. I bought this coat in the bright orange color. (To be fair, the women’s colors were not as cool as the men’s). This is my only regret as it is made with such quality that I know this coat will last me at least 10 more years, if not my whole life. That means I unknowingly condemned myself to a life of bright orange. It was a bold choice, certainly a statement. Word of advice: Think about the quality and longevity of this item and really ask yourself, do you want to wear this color for the rest of your life?? For size reference, I am 5’4, 127 lb, and the women’s small size fits perfectly. I can wear a layering long sleeve underneath, but a sweatshirt underneath fits a little more snug than I prefer. I did have to roll the sleeves up because they were approximately 2 inches too long. (Short arms for me, I guess. Anyways, best coat. I love Mountain Hardware, and I am always trying to convince my friends to get a Ghost Whisperer. You should probably buy this coat.
Cozy, Lightweight, and Trail-Ready
I took this jacket out for a weekend in Vermont and New Hampshire that included leafing peeping, hiking up in the White Mountains, and visiting the local brewpub–this jacket was awesome for all of the above! It's incredibly lightweight and packed down well into a small pocket of my backpack. It kept me super warm, it fits well, and it's amazingly comfortable and cozy.
Poor quality product and expensive
Poor fit and inferior quality. Armholes are too tight so the skimpy amount of down compressed after wearing it only twice. It looks terrible now. I really like the fit otherwise, but I can’t wear it around town now. It looks dirty.
Zipper poor quality
Pros: Great fit, warm and light weight. Cons: The worst zipper quality ever designed. The zipper ripped the fabric of the jacket. Don't waste your money on this one. Very disappointing Mountain Hardware.
Compressible, Light, Stylish, but Not Durable
I've owned this puffy for 2 years now, and I've really put it through the ringer (it's my only puffy). It's gone up many multipitch climbing routes, and has accompanied me while cragging, bouldering, skiing, biking, rafting, and camping. I even sleep with this thing on sometimes when I'm camping in really cold weather. The hood is really clutch and fits well over climbing helmets. I love the compressibility and the weight-to-warmth ratio. I stuff it in a stuff sack instead of its own pocket because it's a really tight fit and takes a minute to zip up completely. It fits under a harness really well. Climbing in it is fine, but not ideal since it fits pretty snug. The zippers always zip and I've never had problems of it snagging. I'm 135lbs, 5'8", and have broad shoulders. The medium has a performance fit and the shoulders are a smidge tight, but it's not too uncomfortable. The color is really pretty and vibrant. Overall, I do like the fit for belaying, camping, or chilling, but not the best for full-on activities like multipitch climbing since the shoulders feel a little restrictive for my body type. I think it is a stylish, light, compressible, technical down jacket, but you have to give up durability which is unfortunate. At this point in its life, every time I go out to climb and pull it out of my pack, I find down precious coming out from a new micro-hole (see photos). It's mostly in the arms and near the hips where I think gets rubbed by harnesses a lot. I take care of my gear fairly well, but inevitably I will end up hiking through narrow canyons, hitting my arm on rock while bouldering or something, and be exposed to rocky elements in general. To that kind of use, I don't think this jacket holds up well, which is too bad because it's a nice technical piece of gear in most other aspects, especially for petite women.
Fabric is terribly see through
I just got this jacket for my trip to Iceland and was so excited, especially about the unique color (lantern). However, because the fabric is so thin and light, every single feather shows up behind the fabric and in all of the seams making it look like the jacket is dirty.
We're sorry to hear you don't like the design but thank you for leaving us your thoughts! We certainly appreciate the feedback.
Best Valued Light Down Jacket
This 2nd Gen GW/2 is our favorite, even though it’s only 800-fill RDS®-certified down insulation fill, as opposed to the 1000 fill of the latest GW/ UL. The GW/2 also has the hem adjustable draw cord, which is absent in the newer UL.
Comfortable and warm
Love the fit- I bought an XL so I could wear a sweater underneath for temps lower than 40°F. I have a similar jacket from another brand without a hood that I’m keeping in my motorcycle for cold mornings and evenings, worn under my motorcycle jacket. I discovered the importance of having an attached hood when I forgot to put my hat back in my car. So I bought this jacket for when I’m not on my motorcycle. I love the coloring- looks like but is not camouflage. Adds dimension as opposed to solid black. I appreciate the full pockets on a women’s jacket. Very thin and lightweight but it is warm for me to 40° with just a tshirt underneath.
Good jacket, just can’t go the distance…
I’ve had this jacket for several years now and as much as I like it, it’s also a huge disappointment in the following ways: delicate fabric (I have patched it numerous times) and hemorrhages feathers, especially on the arms, & no cinch feature in the hood. If you just think about coming in contact with a branch, or maybe some rocks, this thing develops a hole. And the same can be said for feathers - it started losing feather the first month I had it. It’s a shame we don’t see more welded seam construction because every place there is a stitch a feather finds its way out. I’m tempted to get another one though because the fit is good and it’s a decent little lightweight down jacket. If you plan on casual town wear it probably will do just fine, I use my jackets for everything - hiking, walking, doing outside chores and so on - admittedly, I am probably pretty taxing on my clothes - I don’t worry about getting dirty if the need arises. This jacket looks like a patchwork piece - lots of tenacious tape and featherless baffles. I also think it could use a small pocket tucked inside - like a reverse napoleon pocket. FYI: the zipper is a little brat.
Innovative and Versitile 3 Season Staple
Pros: The Ghost Whisperer Jacket presents an impressive blend of weightlessness, breathability and durability. Its maintenance of loft when wet and low profile prepares it for an incredible variety of weather conditions. Butter fabric along the inner cuff resists pilling, is as soft as its name, and effectively seals in warmth. Many people fear the Ghost Whisperer fabric is flimsy and prone to tearing. I have yet to experience this and doubt I will. You can tell it was constructed with integrity, precision and attention to detail. Sewing work is clean throughout and notions are functional and sensibly colored. Clever design decisions such as loop for carabiner make this jacket highly user friendly. Cons: While the majority of the garment fits true to size, I find the arm holes of the jacket to be much too snug. It's a shame because everything else about this jacket lends itself to seamless layering and this feature is rather encumbering. I really appreciate the storage pouch-makes packing quite convenient. However, in the pocket that transforms into the pouch, there is an exposed serged seam allowance which is distracting when putting bare hands into pockets for warmth, especially since this seam allowance is absent from the other pocket. This is a minor issue and doesn't effect performance, but unfortunately apparent. Overall a stellar product and highly recommended! If you are looking for a jacket you can throw over a t-shirt, tie around your waist and also pack for a friged alpine trip- look no further.
