I bought these Waterproof sneakers for double-duty wear....wet, muddy trails, and as my new replacement golf kicks. Surprisingly, this pair of Altra's with a roomy toebox offer great traction and stability on the golf course and range So far, feet have remained dry in wet, dewy, and moderately puddled conditions. Relatively easy to clean although the light color will darken after one clean. The shoe's interior stays dry after rinsing the shoe's with running water on the shoe's exterior in order to remove mud and debris after 18 holes. Haven't tested them much on rough, rugged, and soaked trails, but I would imagine the Waterproof would hold up.
I was looking forward to these boots. They look great and feel great on city walks. However, they gave me a blister on the first hike. I love width and hight of toe box. I love their flatness. They are great for running. Very stable. I bought size 9 even though I normally buy size 8. This was a very good choice because I use thicker woolen socks. The design is good but I have some suggestions. 1. Cut in heel in the sole. This would prevent slipping on wet rocks. 2. Narrower shoe laces space. This would redesign area where a shoe tong connects to the rest of the boot. This is the area which gave me a blister. 3. Width of the heel can be considered excessive. It's for stability I assume but my previous hiking boots from asolo were narrow and very stable. I do like this boots more though. Overall, I highly recommend and I hope that they won't give me blisters again. Question: why did I get a blister on one foot only? I noticed that this particular boot, in this particular place is slightly thicker than the other boot. Perhaps this is enough to hurt my foot.
I purchased the brown/taupe and in the ad photos, they appear to be beige and lighter grey. In reality the uppers are much darker. The orangey/gum coloured accents on the treads are actually red brick colour. I understand there are many factors that can change how a photo is presented, but this one seems really off. Fit is true to size for me. We will see how they break in. Cheers.
I bought these shoes for the Camino Portuguese from Porto to Santiago (~160 miles), which I just finished. It was my sixth Camino and my fifth pair of Astra shoes. On sunny days the GTXs are hotter than the Olympus 5s, on rainy days they are just as wet inside. If all you're doing is stepping in puddles on a short walk to the bus, the GTXs will fit the bill. But if you're walking for hours in steady rain the Gortex holds back the water for a while but once the socks get wet, the feet get wet. That said, for keeping occasional water out the GTXs are better than the 5s, My biggest concern with these shoes is they squeak - badly. The squeeks in both shoes started one wet day and have continued ever since regardless of the dampness (or lack thereof) of the shoes or the walking surface. For a while I thought it was the Sole insoles I was using. Changed back to the OEM insoles and squeaks continued. It's loud enough that my walking companions could hear me coming. For me, the squeak is a deal breaker. My four year old Lone Peak 4s are worn out but never sounded like this. Because of the squeak, I am taking them back to REI to exchange for something else. All up, I love Altra shoes. I wouldn't walk long distances in anything else, but because of the really annoying squeak, I think I may go back to the Olympus 5s and save the price difference.
Shoes feel great after one full day of wearing them, very light compared to many other shoes I’ve worn. Roomy toe box so if you’re wide feet , they do feel great however , the laces are super short, I couldn’t even tie 1 full knot , wish they had longer laces for people who’s feet swell a little and need loose laces.
This is my second Altra purchase. I decided to get goretex Olympus 6 for the colder weather. Unfortunately, they look very cheap and poorly done. I don’t know if they will be waterproof with the gaps. I would also size bigger as usual, they feel tight
These shoes fit just slightly more snug than my other Altras. I love the way they look, the fact that they’re waterproof, nice and cushy. I laced them on and was ready for a dog walk BUT they rub right on my ankle. Might work with taller socks but I like wearing no shows and thicker sock would make these too snug. At $200. these really need to be the best hikers ever.
My main use is that I live in a rainy & humid area, so I want lightweight, waterproof for casual use. So, whenever my current low-top GoreTex shoes near end of life, I go looking for a replacement that is ideally on sale and well reviewed. I can't tell yet on durability or waterproofing. Comfort is good so far. I've only done short, easy hikes. I haven't used any zero-rise shoes before, nor large toe-box, but I like the ideas so was glad to try these when they were on sale. My main issue is that even compared to all my previous GoreTex shoes, these make my feet sweat a LOT. So, if you're in a warm climate, keep that in mind. Also, the round laces have a hard time staying tied, even double-knotted.
Just came back from completing the Tour Du Mont Blanc! A 100 mile hiking trek through the mountains of France, Italy and Switzerland. Super comfortable, no blisters and the water proof helped a ton through many water crossings. Definitely would recommend!
For the first 10ish months the shoes were quite nice, and then the squeaks started and never stopped. The soles are so loud on sidewalk, street, any hard surface and even on dirt! I've never had shoes that incessantly squeaked before. I like the fit, but I sure hope the redo the material on the sole. It ruins them
