Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

These boots are perfect for me. I’m a very casual hiker. I get out maybe once or twice a month. Usually on 3-5 mile hikes. The wide toe box was my main motivation in buying these boots since I’m making a change to foot shaped shoes. Overall, I’m very satisfied with my purchase. These boots give me the support, stability, and comfort that I’ve been looking for. They look pretty cool too.
I tried to love these boots, I really did. I've had Altras in the past and now that these have Vibram rubber I thought they would last a little longer than previous pairs. I tried them on in store and read the reviews knowing that where the tongue is attaches to the upper on both sides are known hot spots, but they didn't seem to align with my foot anatomy so I figured I was in the clear. I went for a 14 mile hike on the PCT and they did really well. They have great traction, uphill travel was very nice, waterproofing is phenomenal thanks to Gore-Tex, and the styling is right up my alley. Going downhill is when I first noticed the tongue hotspots. Not a big deal I thought, until I put them on again to wear as daily shoes with thinner socks, and that's when I really noticed them digging into my ankles. The only way I can wear these boots pain free is without tying the upper section or leaving the laces incredibly loose, defeating the purpose of having a boot to create ankle support. Another area of the boot that didn't seem to hold up is the midsole. I'm not a clumsy hiker, but after just one hike the mid-soles have chunks taken out of them. Unfortunately these will be getting returned less than a week after purchasing them.
Hard to say if I would recommend this shoe to a distance hiker. I went out for a five mile hike to break the new shoes in. First thing I noticed was the upper grommets that hold the laces jabed into my upper ankle. I adjusted the toung a bit to protect my ankle. You can see on the pictures what happens to the front of the rubber. It has already started to peel away from the shoe. The side foam got damaged, but hope those are only cosmetic and don't effect the shoe functionality. I am hoping these shoes can make in on my planned long distance hike. I had a cheap pair of Columbia shoes that made it without any visible damage.
I have three other Altras including the Timp trail running shoes and they're all great, so I expected these boots to be equally good. After wearing them around the house for an hour I began experiencing severe irritation on my inside ankle bone. I should have read the reviews on the Altra site before buying them - many others report the identical issue. (There's a hard protruding area where the tongue is attached to the inside of the boot near the lower lacing hooks.) Due to this problem they're unwearable so regretfully I will be returning them. For context, this is the first negative product review I've ever written.
I love the fit and feel of Altra shoes, and the Timp 5 fits and feels great. I like the traction, dig the green color, but again, Altras seem to miss the mark in durability. I have a beautiful pair of their boots, weeks old, grateful and stoked, and the surface of the shoe in the toe cap area is degenerating rapidly, peeling and shaving away. I use them only for hiking my property, and light tree work. The snow has been proper deep, but I have used them a handful of times and they seem to be failing rapidly. I live in a remote area so I will wear them until they perish, but pretty sad with altra again, and probably wont give them another last try. I have rolled many pairs of Altras, love em, but man do they miss the mark in the durability category.
I went on ONE hike. Nothing crazy, one hike. My boots literally began tearing. These are extremely low quality, not durable. Pretty sad, especially for the price point :(
Horrible durability. I'll be lucky to get four hikes out of these. After my first hike (12 miles in Goat Rocks) the rubber at the front of the toe had already completely separated. My second hike, 9 miles in the snow, and the leather in the toe has already substantially worn, likely due to the friction with the snow. I worry for the waterproofing. The rubber has separated even further. I consider myself a fairly typical hiker. 5'10" and 160 lbs. Not exactly hard on my gear. It's such a shame too because these fit my feet very well. Absolutely do not rely on these for anything but the most pristine, paved hikes.
This shoe has been a game changer for me, but it is not without issues. Durability is OK, but the toe caps peeled back after a few hikes due to separation of the leather top surface. More importantly, the location and shape of the lacing hooks makes them dangerous. I have caught the hook on one shoe with a hook on the other a couple times. If you have never done this, it means being dropped quickly to the ground when you feet lock together and come out from under you. I deal with this by always wearing gaiters and keeping the upper laces tighter than I would prefer, so not the end if the shoe, but something to be aware of.
I have been wearing the Altra Lone Peak Mid AWT Hiker for years. Own 3 different colors cause they are extremely comfortable. I thought I would give the new Vibram sole a try in the Tmp Hiker. I wear a Mens 9, as a woman, I prefer men's colors and fit. I found this Hiker to be very uncomfortable around the ankle. They are the identical design as mt Lone Peak Mid hikers. I've never had any issues with those and no breaking period ever needed. ALTRA...what are you doing? what's with the shorter laces?? impossible to double tie the laces. I know Altra upgraded their Gortex waterproof...but I returned these cause they just ran smaller than my Lone Peak Mid ALW hikers.
I have almost the exact same review as another person here. I have purchased 2 different individual pairs of these boots. The first ones I purchased, I originally had no ankles seam issues and they were very comfortable but, after a while the toe piece on the end started to peel away, this was after only 45-50 miles of hiking. I returned and ordered another pair in hopes that it was just a manufacturing defect. The new boots arrived and as I tightened them, I found the painful "ankle seam" the other person was talking about. The shoes are $180 and I wear them for 3-8 hours at a time, I want them to feel comfortable. No matter how you adjust these shoes that seam still rubs into your ankle. The first picture is of a good seam, and the second picture listed is the "problem seam". I just wish they were stitched/sewed/manufactured a little bit better. Returning this new pair to try the lone peak 9's and see if I have any better luck.
