Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I really do like Altras, great shoes. Pros: fantastic ergonomic fit for wide toe box, not wide foot. The smartwool breathes easy and comfortable. Cons: The soles wear down to EVA foam in about 3 months or 70-75 miles of pavement and asphalt walking. Bought Oct 5, 2024, down to foam in Jan 5, 2025.
The soles wear down is consistent across the last 6 pairs I’ve purchased.

Sweet Pair of Altras!

I didn't need another pair of shoes but when my two fave brands hooked up I couldn't resist. I exclusively been wearing Altras for many years. And I live in my Smartwool tops, pants, underpants, socks, jackets, sweaters, beanie etc! I hesitated because in the photos here the colors seemed a bit too pastel-like for my taste but out of the box they look great! Only just got them but I can tell they will be go to shoes!

Not sure if it’s a placebo effect, but I do feel my feet are not as cold as quickly as other Altra running shoes. Quality seems to be holding well after only 3 months of daily use. Compared to the E-Racer 1.0, the E4 feels more durable than the Racer 1.0 — whereas the Racer 1.0 developed bilateral toe holes at ~3 months of use. Only time will tell if the E4 will hold up to its quality/durability-to-cost ratio. E4 Comfort is comparable, if not better than the Racer 1.0. E4: Comfort — 5/5 Durability — 4/5 Racer 1.0: Comfort — 3.5/5 Durability — 1.5/5

I needed new sneakers for a weeklong trip to Disney World with the littles. I wore them for a couple of days before the trip just to make sure they didn’t irritate me in any way, then it was off to WDW … at Christmas … with two kids. My feet were in heaven the whole time. 20,000 steps a day (a lot more than a typical day for me) for over a week and I have zero complaints. In fact, these shoes made me realize I’ve been buying too narrow of shoes and really doing my feet a disservice. I’m now an Altra convert.

Fantastic fit and comfort, uneven wear down

Really, really comfortable. Bought for a two week trip in Japan in November, walked more than ten miles each day, and was on my feet for about twelve hours each day. Almost no aching save for the more intense days. Mostly asphalt with some established dirt trails. Only gripe is that the bottom tread did not wear evenly for me. It is already nearly shot towards the front of the shoe but the heel is only slightly worn. I have had them for five months now.

This is the third pair of Escalante that I have bought. I loved the first pair, which were Escalante 2.5. They were the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. The second pair were Escalante 4 and they felt more tight on my feet than the 2.5. The Escalante 4 were less comfortable for me but still acceptable. Then I bought the Smartwool Escalante 4 and found them to be so tight on my right foot that I had to use a shoe horn to get that shoe on. The Smartwool Escante 4 were so uncomfortable on my right foot that I returned them for a refund.

Just received them and they are the best feeling Altra's I have tried on since my first pair of Torin 2.5"s. Wish Altra could go back to this fit across the line. Time will tell how they wear USPS took their time in delivery

This is my fourth pair of Altra’s and might be my favorite. Great all-around shoes that look great walking around, feel great running, and just make my feet happy. Love the colors and they feel even more comfortable than already-comfortable-out-of-the-box Altra’s. Highly recommend!

Smartwool Collaboration Altra Escalante Shoes

I own a pair of Escalantes, just not the Smartwool collaboration. The colors pop, the subtle touches that Smartwool did for the shoe are pretty sweet and if you want to change the color of the laces, you can…they come with a second pair. If you’re a fan of the Altra brand or of the Escalante shoe, you’re not going to be disappointed. The only reason I gave them 4 stars and not 5 is because you can’t grade on the quarter scale…I’d buy the shoes again, collaboration or not.
